Winter is still in full swing, so you might need a simple pattern and instructions for a balaclava. This balaclava is quite easy to sew and therefore suitable for intermediate sewers and daring beginners. The pattern is available in children's, women's, and men's sizes and you can download it and start sewing immediately after paying for the order. The pattern files contain pieces for two styles of balaclava - one leaving the whole face exposed (open/leisure) and the other covers everything except the area around the eyes (1-hole ski mask).

You can sew this balaclava on an overlock machine or a regular sewing machine. In any case, the seams must be elastic so that they do not tear. When sewing on a regular sewing machine, follow the recommendations in this article:

I recommend finishing the bottom hem with a wide zigzag stitch (or serger). Of course, you can finish the bottom hem in the same way as the face opening, or by folding to the inside of the balaclava and topstitching it, but in that case, be very careful not to deform the hem.

This sewing pattern was designed to work with a stable knit fabric like polar fleece, sweatshirt fleece, and French terry. Stable knit fabrics stretch along the horizontal and do not stretch on the vertical. They are often plush and thick which is perfect for keeping warm.

Once the pattern is printed it can be taped together to get the full size. Then the pattern can be cut for each pattern piece size or individual sizes can be traced so that the pattern can be used again and again. Learn how to use PDF sewing patterns.

TIP: For a neater finish and an easier time sewing, draw around your pattern pieces while they are pinned to the felt. You will need a white marker or chalk pen to do this on the dark brown felt. DO NOT cut the felt out.

All patterns include a test square (please check!), and all seam allowances are included. Please follow the video for the seam allowances for different parts of the mask.

{9th May 2020 Update:} After about three weeks of creating a FaceMask Support Group on Facebook, we have almost six thousand members (the numbers are growing). Welcome to join the group to share and discuss topics across the Craft Passion face mask pattern. Ever since the whole world had entered into a pandemic emergency two months ago, face-covering has become an essential item. You need to wear it when you need to go out of your house. We have learned so many things throughout the face mask sewing journey, from materials to pattern and fitting.

Before you start sewing, please pre-wash all fabrics, and rewash them before wearing them. In this tutorial, I used quilting weight cotton on both layers, which is good enough for essential filtration. Besides, I sewed some in cotton flannel as the lining too. The filtration is even better but not recommended for small kids as it might be a little difficult for them to breathe through properly.

Many hospitals and authorities have recommended the printable face mask sewing pattern because it is the best fit homemade fabric face mask. Here are the patterns and tutorials on how to sew these three types of double-layered fabric face masks. You may add more layers on the lining pieces to make a multi-layer face mask for better effectiveness.

2. Base on the choice of face mask you want to sew, follow the sewing instructions accordingly. Watch the sewing video if needed for the instruction of Type C face mask or as a reference for other types.

EDIT - after digging around on the internet, I found a similar pattern you can use with this instructable. -

While the instructions are clear and the video is great, this is just an advertisement for this person's business. You cannot complete this instructable without going to their website and purchasing the pattern.

This is disappointing and completely goes against the spirit of this website. I understand the work that goes into creating patterns but if you're posting on instructables, why not offer this specific pattern for free and use this instructable to drive people to your site. If they enjoy making this one, I bet they would be willing to purchase other patterns.

These were sewn almost entirely on the sewing machine due to the thumb and flap construction. Once again, the walking foot is my MVP! I added some cuffs from my stash for the wrists (unfortunately I used every scrap of the designer ones from my sweatshirt!), but these were added after I took these photos.

It will make it easier if you try on your balaclava after chaining and see if it reaches comfortably. Leave, add or subtract as many chains as needed and then slip stitch into the opposite corner from where you started chaining.

Face Ribbing Rows: Ch 5, sc into the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in remaining 3 ch, work 1 sl st into the next 2 chains you just made, turn your work, skipping the sl sts you just made and *sc blo into the next 3 sts, work 1 normal sc into the last st, turn your work, ch 1 and sc normally into the first st, sc blo into the next 3 sts, work 1 sl st into the next 2 chains you just made, turn your work, *repeat this until you work the ribbing around the face of your balaclava.

A ski mask, or balaclava, is a cloth head cover used to protect the face and head from harsh weather, cold, or wind. Although it can be worn a number of ways, it usually covers the majority of the head, leaving only the eyes exposed. Balaclavas are available at sports stores, ski outfitters and online. However, you can also sew a mask yourself. With a sewing machine, some fleece and a few measurements, you can create a snug, warm ski mask to protect you through the winter.

If you've been making lots of them recently, you probably feel like mixing it up a little and using up different sewing supplies and techniques. For me, it was an effort to use up some colourful jersey leftovers and various types of binding I had in my studio. This is not an upgrade or a better version of the original pattern which I designed back in April, just a slightly different one that I thought some of you might like as an option, especially if you like bound edges (any quilters onboard this ship?). If you'd rather stick to the original pattern, please carry on as usual!

If making your own woven binding, which I did, it has to be cut on the bias (diagonally) as it needs to stretch when attaching it in the next step... so it can't be a strip of fabric cut on a straight grain. You can use ready made bias binding, too, if you happen to have any available. I do prefer using up different colours and patterns from my own fabric scraps though. 006ab0faaa
