Fredric B. Meyer, M.D., is a consultant and professor of neurologic surgery. He is enterprise chair of the Department of Neurologic Surgery at Mayo Clinic and is recognized with the distinction of a named professorship, the Alfred Uihlein Family Professorship of Neurologic Surgery. He is currently the Juanita Kious Waugh Executive Dean of Education of the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science and dean of the Mayo Clinic Alix School of Medicine.

In New York Cityin 1886, Fred G. Meyer was born. His name at the time was Frederick Grubmeyer,but soon people would know him best as Fred Meyer, the owner of the stores withthe same name. All seven brothers in his father's family were grocers so it wasperhaps inevitable that Fred would follow in the family trade. He left New York as a young man and headed out west first to Alaska, then Seattle andeventually Portland, Oregon.
Fred Henry Grubmeyer was born in Germany in 1886. When he was two years old, his family immigrated to Brooklyn, where his father, Conrad Grubmeyer, ran a grocery store. When he was almost eighteen years old, Fred set out on his own. He tried mining gold in Alaska in 1905, but went broke and moved to Seattle. Living at the YMCA, he met Max Heindel, the guiding force behind the Rosicrucian Fellowship, a religious philosophy and membership that Meyer quietly supported the rest of his life. For Meyer, its key principles included clean living, a relentless search for facts, belief in reincarnation, and a desire to help others.

The company already uses third-party security guard services to keep tabs on the interior and exterior of its stores, Kammeyer said, but it's about to boost the number of security guards to the highest level it's ever used.
Kammeyer said he sees the same sort of incidents, and he's acutely aware of how common they've become. Fred Meyer has seen record levels of theft and loss in the past 12 months, he said, and it's taking a toll on the retailer.
Fred Meyer is far from alone; retailers across Portland have been struggling for years with a big upswings in crime and shoplifting, prompting some of them to close their doors. That's a scenario Kammeyer said Fred Meyer is determined to avoid. 2351a5e196
