Welcome!
My name is Francisco Garcia and I am a actor, director, playwright, and educator currently living in Portland Oregon. Some of my directing work includes the world premieres of Swimming While Drowning and Broken Promises for Milagro Theatre, Diary of a Worm Spider and Fly and Tomás & the Library Lady for Oregon Children’s Theatre, Kiss of the Spider Woman for Stumptown Stages , Ofelio for MediaRites, Sequestered Soliloquies for Bag & Baggage Productions, 24 Hour Play Festival for Profile Theater, 545 for Portland Playhouse’s Wonderland Festival of New Works, and Anon(ymous) for Lewis & Clark College, where I also worked as a visiting professor. As an actor, my recent credits include A24 Film’s Lean on Pete, Netflix’s It’s What’s Inside, NBC's Grimm, IFC's Portlandia, and Nassim for Portland Center Stage. Other regional theaters include Mark Taper Forum, Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, Boston Court, Hudson Theatre, Los Angeles Theater Center, and Artists Repertory Theatre. My recent playwriting work includes the commissions of Maya Ruiz Rises for Oregon Children’s Theatre, Sube y Baja for Artists Repertory Theatre and 545 for Portland Playhouse’s Wonderland Festival of New Works. I am a proud member of SAG-AFTRA and Actors' Equity Association, represented by Dangerfield Talent Portland/Los Angeles.
Recent Updates and Announcements:
*01/2025- I am happy to announce that I have been selected as a award recipient for the Miller Foundation's Spark Award in the Performing Arts. 20 Oregon artists were selected in the disciplines of Theatre, Dance, and Music, from 300 applicants. Truly honored to be a part of the inaugural group of recipients in this new awards program.
*11/2024- I am currently appearing in the film It's What's Inside now streaming on Netflix, which premiered earlier this year at the Sundance Film Festival. I recently directed the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman for Stumptown Stages, which played at the Portland'5 Center for the Arts from October 4th-27th. My new play Sube y Baja also recently had a staged reading on October 14th sponsored by the West Linn Alliance and was also part of the Fertile Ground Festival earlier this year in April of 2024.
ACTOR
I have acted for such theaters as the Mark Taper Forum, Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, Bilingual Foundation of the Arts, Boston Court, Hudson Theatre, Los Angeles Theater Center, Artists Repertory Theatre, Portland Center Stage, CoHo Theatre and Milagro Theatre. My recent film, television, and theatre credits include Netflix's It's What's Inside, A24 Film's Lean on Pete, IFC's Portlandia, NBC's Grimm, and Nassim (Portland Center Stage/Boom Arts). Favorite roles include Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles), Bottom in A Midsummer Night’s Dream (East Los Angeles Repertory) and Pablo Escobar in Our Dear Dead Drug Lord (Crave Theatre/Imago Theatre). I am a proud member of SAG-AFTRA-AEA and reprented by Dangerfield Talent Portland/Los Angeles.
DIRECTOR
I recently directed the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman for Stumptown Stages at the Portland 5 Center for the Arts. Other directing credits include Emilio Rodriguez’s Swimming While Drowning, Naomi Iizuka’s Anon(ymous), José Cruz González’s Tomás & the Library Lady, Qui Nguyen's She Kill's Monsters, Olga Sanchez’s Broken Promises, and Joan Cushing’s Diary of a Worm a Spider and a Fly. I also has directed staged readings, workshops, and virtual productions for such theaters as Milagro Theatre, Profile Theater, Bag & Baggage, Portland Playhouse, LineStorm Playwrights, MediaRites Productions and Oregon Children's Theatre. In 2023, I served as a directing fellow for the Latino Theatre Commons/ HowlRound Director and Designer Colaboratorio.
PLAYWRIGHT
As a playwright, my most recent commissions include Maya Ruiz Rises for Oregon Children’s Theatre, 545 for Portland Playhouse’s Wonderland Festival of New Works, and Sube y Baja for Artists Repertory Theatre’s Mercury Company (Finalist for 2023’s Portland Civic Theatre Guild’s New Play Award, selected for Desert Islands Top Secret Club Reading Series, and selected for the 2024 Fertile Ground Festival). Previously, I served as a guest playwright for CalArts CAP Program and wrote The Legend of Lauren Lopez, which was performed at REDCAT Theatre and Plaza de la Raza in Los Angeles. I am a company member of LineStorm Playwrights, which is currently in residence at Artists Repertory Theatre. I studied Playwriting at CSULA, where I received my Master's degree.
EDUCATOR
As an educator, I have taught classes and workshops in acting, directing, playwriting, auditioning, classical theatre, multicultural theater and theatre for social justice for such educational institutions and artistic programs as Lewis & Clark College, Reed College, California Institute of the Arts, Mark Taper Forum, Shakespeare Center of Los Angeles, Portland Center Stage, Portland Area Theatre Alliance, Los Angeles Unified School District, NW Academy, and Portland Public Schools. I Recently served as the TOSA for Theatre and Dance for PPS, where I was the district’s curriculum specialist planing professional development workshops and trainings for all K-12 theatre educators, facilitating district theatre events and teacher trainings.
