Workshop on Fostering the VR, AR and MR Research Community in Canada (Fostering VR/AR/MR) at GI 2024

Workshop on Fostering the Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality and Mixed Reality Research Community in Canada (Fostering VR/AR/MR) at GI 2024,

Date: 3 June 2024, Halifax, Canada

Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR) and Mixed Reality (MR) have become mainstream technologies. Recent advances in VR/AR/MR display technologies have led to high-resolution, ergonomic, and – critically – low-cost head-mounted displays (HMDs). Advances in commercial input devices and interaction techniques have arguably not kept pace with these advances in display systems. For instance, most HMDs include tracked input devices, but these “controllers” are still fairly like the earliest examples of 3D controllers used in the VR systems of the 1980s. Interaction in commercial VR systems has similarly lagged; despite many advances in 3D interaction in the past three decades of VR research, interaction in commercial systems largely relies on classical techniques like the virtual hand or ray-casting.

Topics

This half-day workshop will bring together researchers and industry practitioners interested in VR/AR/MR to envision a shared research agenda to advance the field in Canda and to identify strategies to make the community contributions more visible and impactful. We invite authors to submit 4–6-page papers on any of the following categories:

v  Methodological papers should describe advances in theories and methods of VR/AR/MR and 3DUI, such as ethical issues, theories on presence, or human factors.

v  Technical papers should describe advancements in algorithms or devices critical to VR/AR/MR and 3DUI development such as input, display, user interaction, or tracking.

v  Application papers provide an important insight to the community by explaining how the authors built upon existing ideas and applied them to solve an interesting problem in a novel way. Each paper should include an evaluation of the success of the use of VR/AR/MR and/or 3DUI in the given application domain.

v  System papers should indicate how the developers’ integrated techniques and technologies to produce an effective system, and convey any lessons learned in the process.

Related but unlisted topics are also welcome. In addition to a presentation at the workshop, authors will participate in networking events and working sessions.

Submission Information

Fostering VR/AR/MR 2024 will accept 4-6 pages of short papers (references included). All papers are non-archival. Moreover, in the spirit of idea exchange, we encourage you to submit relevant previously published work or work in progress that you intend to publish elsewhere. For published work, include the citation and identify the venue in the abstract.

Papers should be submitted via this link: https://forms.gle/mcEwG4eth61sviYZ6

Submissions must be anonymized and in PDF, using the ACM format:  https://www.acm.org/publications/proceedings-template

All submissions will be reviewed by experts in the areas listed above. At least one author of each accepted submission must register for the workshop and at least one day of the GI 2024 conference.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Authors of accepted papers are expected to give a 12-minute presentation at the workshop.
