Formula racing (known as open-wheel racing in North America) is any of several forms of open-wheeled single-seater motorsport. The origin of the term lies in the nomenclature that was adopted by the FIA for all of its post-World War II single-seater regulations, or formulae. The best known of these formulae are Formula One, Formula E, Formula Two, Formula Three, regional Formula Three and Formula Four. Common usage of "formula racing" encompasses other single-seater series, including the IndyCar Series and the Super Formula Championship.

Categories such as Formula Three and Formula Two are described as feeder formulae, which refers to their position below top-level series like Formula One on their respective career ladders of single-seater motor racing. There are two primary forms of racing formula: the open formula that allows a choice of chassis or engines and the control or "spec" formula that relies on a single supplier for chassis and engines. Formula Three is an example of an open formula, while Formula BMW is a control formula. There are also some exceptions on these two forms like Formula Ford where there is an open chassis formula but a restricted single brand engine formula.

In the process of reviving Grand Prix racing after the end of World War II, the Fdration Internationale de l'Automobile's Commission Sportive Internationale was responsible for defining the standardised regulations of Formula One (F1) in 1946. The first race to be run to the early Formula One regulations was a non-championship Grand Prix in Turin in September 1946. The first officially recognised Formula One season was held in 1947 and the World Championship for Drivers was inaugurated in 1950. This was the first example of formula racing.[citation needed]

The IndyCar Series is the premier level of formula racing in North America. The sport, in general, traces its roots as far back as 1905. The current series, founded by then-Indianapolis Motor Speedway CEO Tony George, began in 1996 as the "Indy Racing League" (IRL). In 2008, the series merged with the rival Champ Car World Series, formerly known as CART, to form the IndyCar Series. A typical IndyCar season contains races on a mixture of natural terrain road courses, temporary street circuits, small ovals (also known as short tracks), and larger, high-speed ovals (also known as superspeedways); including the historic Indianapolis 500.

The USF2000 Championship formally known as U.S. F2000 National Championship is an American variation of the Formula Ford. The series was initially founded by Dan Andersen and Mike Foschi in 1990 and regularly fielded over 60 entries per race. In 2001, the series was sold to Jon Baytos who introduced a number of controversial rule changes that brought the series out of alignment with similar SCCA classes, which led to a reduction in participation and the end of the series in 2006. In 2010, the series returned under the leadership of Andersen with the intent to return F2000 to its status as a feeder formula for higher open wheel racing classes in the United States.

The Formula 3000 was created by the Fdration Internationale de l'Automobile in 1985 to become the final step for drivers before entering Formula One. Formula Two had become too expensive and was dominated by works-run cars with factory engines. Formula 3000 offered quicker, cheaper, more open racing. The series began as an open formula, but in 1986 tyres were standardized, followed by engines and chassis in 1996. The series ran until 2004 and was replaced in 2005 by the GP2 Series.

A1 Grand Prix (A1GP) was unique in its field in that competitors solely represented their nation as opposed to themselves or a team, the usual format in most formula racing series. As such, it was often promoted as the "World Cup of Motorsport". Also, the series attracted equal numbers of (former or future) Formula One drivers and IndyCar Series drivers. The concept was founded by Sheikh Al Maktoum of Dubai in 2004, but sold to the FIA in 2005. The races were held in the traditional Formula One off-season, the northern hemisphere winter. Between 2005 and 2009 29 countries from five continents participated.

Cardinal Formula Racing (CFR) is a faculty led student racing team that competes in the Formula SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Collegiate Design Series (CDS) competitions. CFR conceives designs, builds and races small Indy-style racecars to compete in the most prestigious student design competition in the world, Formula SAE.

CFR is a special program in SVSU's College of Science, Engineering and Technology. CFR is made up of 20 to 30 students from engineering, business and art. CFR is an extracurricular program, but there are mechanisms in the engineering, business and art curriculum for the students to earn course credit. There are two faculty advisors, one from mechanical engineering and one from business. There is also one industry and racing advisor.

Becoming a successful racer does not end on the podium. How a driver navigates their race team, sponsors, and marketing opportunities is equally important as their skill behind the wheel. With the Skip Barber Formula Race Series, we expose drivers to pro-racing through the SRO World Challenge paddock, with training that includes:

Formula SAE (FSAE) is an intercollegiate engineering design competition organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), where student teams design, build, and race formula-style cars. FSAE began in the USA in 1978, and now includes hundreds of international teams that compete in eight competitions around the world.

The concept of the competition is for students to design, build, and race a prototype formula-style vehicle. The prototype is marketed towards the non-professional, weekend autocross racer. It must be high-performance, low cost, easy to maintain, and suitable for manufacture at 1000 units per year. Students manage all aspects of the project like a small business, from the technical design to the management of an interdisciplinary team.

Building a racing car is not all engineering. Complex projects require strong leaders and a cooperative environment to succeed. In addition to managing the project, students must present a business case to a prospective manufacturer as well as a detailed manufacturing and cost analysis, showing complete understanding of what it takes to bring a product to market.

Formula SAE is an international collegiate racing series organized by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). The Formula SAE engineering design competition is for both undergraduate and graduate students. The two United States competitions take place at Michigan International Speedway (May) and Lincoln Airpark (June), hosting 120 and 80 teams, respectively, from all around the globe.

Temple Formula Racing, TFR, is Temple University's Formula Society of Automotive Engineers organization, FSAE for short. FSAE is a collegiate design series in which students design, validate and build a formula style car each year. The car is then taken to competitions in both Pittsburg and Michigan to race against other teams from around the world. TFR is open to all majors at Temple University and relies heavily on the involvement of may different majors. Engineers design and build the car. Business majors handle budgeting, marking, social media and general team operations. Film majors produce content for the team. Arts students can work along side the engineers to create the molds for our carbon fiber body panels, design the livery and/or do graphic design for a wide variety of applications. There is a need and a spot for anyone looking to join and build a racecar.

The Formula SAE series competitions challenge teams of university undergraduate and graduate students to conceive, design, fabricate, develop, and compete with small, formula-style vehicles. The competitions give teams the chance to demonstrate and prove both their creativity and engineering skills in comparison to teams from other universities around the world. Members from all backgrounds are welcome, especially those interested in design engineering, and business.

We are Formula Racing at UC Davis (FRUCD). Each year, we design, manufacture, and compete with a fully electric racecar from scratch. Our team is entirely student run --- all design, fabrication, planning, marketing, outreach, and racing is done by students. In the last in-person season, we placed 4th overall against top universities from around the world and hope to build on this strong performance. Our students leave the team with hands-on engineering experience with communicating, working in groups, and managing time effectively. Many of our alumni go off to make significant impacts in the world with their Formula Racing experiences.

Anteater Formula Racing builds an open-wheel, internal-combustion race car inspired by Formula 1 and IndyCar racing to compete at Formula SAE California. Forty-five engineering students participate in the design, manufacturing and testing phases to gain the engineering skills needed for industry in a highly-technical, fast-paced and competitive environment. The team collectively spends over 10,000 man-hours each year developing the car and its subsystems alongside engineering coursework.

The Iowa Formula Racing team is a nonprofit, student organization that designs, manufactures and competes with a formula race car at international competition. We compete in the FSAE competitions to provide an opportunity for students to learn critical problem solving and professional skills outside of the classroom. We have opportunities to design, build, fundraise, run social media campaign, program, lead and much more. IFR is an excellent way to gain experience, build your resume and have fun building a race car!
