Bull kelp is a habitat forming species in our nearshore ecosystems in northern California. This brown algae forms incredible underwater forests that historically supported economically-significant commercial and recreational fisheries, as well as culturally-significant practices and resources. The Greater Farallones Kelp Restoration Program works to protect and restore kelp forests along the northern California coastline. Our goal is to implement strategies and investigate opportunities for active restoration, monitoring, research and community engagement.

Kelp forests can be seen along much of the west coast of North America. Kelp are large brown algae that live in cool, relatively shallow waters close to the shore. They grow in dense groupings much like a forest on land.

Kelp forests grow predominantly along the Eastern Pacific Coast, from Alaska and Canada to the waters of Baja, California. These kelp forests are found in four of our national marine sanctuaries along the West Coast,and are dominated by two species: giant kelp and bull kelp.

Biome backgrounds are images that appear behind objects and blocks in each biome. Each biome has its own set of backgrounds that usually show a landscape of the biome. In a world, each biome is randomly assigned a background from its own set, and can be changed by using a World Globetag_hash_108tag_hash_115. Backgrounds can also be overridden using Monoliths. Backgrounds do not affect a biome in any way, except in The Hallow, where the current background affects the style of hallowed trees. Turning off backgrounds in Settings hides them, though ambient entities will still appear.

On the PC version, Console version, Mobile version, Old Chinese version, tModLoader version, and tModLoader 1.3-Legacy version, the following backgrounds are used. On the Old-gen console version, Windows Phone version, and Nintendo 3DS version, the cavern layer background for any other biome the player is in is dynamically tinted purple.

Leaf area index (LAI) is one of the most important Earth's surface parameters in carbon balance and climate models. However, vegetation background (soil/moss/grass/shrub in forests) is a recognized problem that limits the accuracy of satellite-estimated forest LAI. In this study, we verify the feasibility of using multi-angle remote sensing to determine the optical properties of the vegetation background. Studies of the bidirectional behavior of forest canopy have shown that the total reflectance of a forest canopy is the combination of illuminated and shaded components of the tree crown as well as the background. Data from Compact Airborne Spectrographic Imager (CASI) positioned at the nadir and 40 forward directions over a boreal forest site near Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, were used to derive the reflectivity of the forest background based on the probabilities of viewing the illuminated tree crown and background at those view angles. The probabilities were estimated using the Four-Scale model. The derived values were then compared with in-situ background reflectance measured at the test sites. The modification of the background by white and black plastic sheets, together with the unmodified understory in the immediate neighborhood of the sites, provided us with two extreme limits and intermediate cases for the development and testing of the model for the successful retrieval of the information from the data. The results show that the developed methodology is capable of obtaining background reflectance for various forest stand conditions. This verification of the concept in the field is an important step towards the operational estimation of the forest background reflectance from the bidirectional reflections observed by Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument. Preliminary Canada-wide maps of background reflectance in red and NIR bands have been produced using MISR data.
