It is the act of moving to form letters and symbols and all factors relative to the motion of the writing instrument. It is a primary determinant of the speed of writing of a person.
FINGER MOVEMENT
This is commonly employed by the beginners. It is the action of the thumb, index and middle fingers in writing.
Characteristics:
1.It results to an inferior or poor quality of writing with lack of rhythm and speed.
2.Spacing is copped up and the dashes are usually absent.
3.Finishes are done in irregular and abrupt manner or are varied between letters.
4.Pen usually starts resting on the paper and ends with short and abrupt strokes due to limited and irregular movements of the fingers.
5.Shading is pronounced.
6.Lack of clear-cut, smooth and regular lines.
HAND MOVEMENT
A writing movement that has a limited freedom and involves the action of the entire hand. The wrist is the pivotal point of the writing.
Characteristics:
1.Affords more expensive writing
2.Connections at the top and bottom of letters are narrow
3.There is considerable speed in movements
4.More regularity of the lines
FOREARM OR MUSCULAR MOVEMENT
It includes the motion of the arms while the hands and fingers are steady. This movement shows extreme speed and there is force and continuity of the writing movement. It covers a wide range and longer radius than the other movements.
Characteristics:
1.Shows the greatest freedom and speed
2.Smooth clear-cut as indicative of rhythm
3.Slight shading is produced
4.Lateral movements is longer, making the shifting of the lateral movement hard fewer
5.Uniformity in size of letters
WHOLE ARM MOVEMENT
It involves the action of the entire arm without rest and is employed in very large writing. Ornamental penmanship, blackboard writing, and by a few writers making all the capital letters are some of the writings where the movement is being employed.
EXTENSORS- muscles responsible for the upward movement of fingers and tends to make them straighten out
FLEXORS- muscles responsible for the downward movement of the fingers.
LUMBRICAL- this is the combination of the external and flexor muscles that form lateral or horizontal strokes.
Clumsy, illiterate, and halting
Hesitating and painful through weakness or disease
Nervous and irregular
Strong, heavy, and forceful
Smooth, flowing, and rapid
