No man is an Island, intire of it selfe; every man is a piece of the Continent, a part of the maine; if a Clod bee washed away by the Sea, Europe is the lesse, as well as if a Promontorie were, as well as if a Mannor of thy friends or of thine owne  were; any mans death diminishes me, because I am involved in Mankinde; And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; It tolls for thee.

The famous and pivotal scene described in Chapter 10, in which Pilar describes the execution of various fascist figures in her village, is drawn from events that took place in Ronda in 1936. Although Hemingway later claimed (in a 1954 letter to Bernard Berenson) to have completely fabricated the scene, he in fact drew upon the events at Ronda, embellishing the event by imagining an execution line leading up to the cliff face.[17]

The evening before I left for Bombay, I was home alone because V had taken the kids off to Coorg, so I of course made a plan to meet MinCat for a drink, this time *gasp* at her local instead of her house. When I got there, there were two other friends at the table, one of whom was drinking mohito. Against my better judgment, I ordered one, then another. I paid for it overnight.

As a story, it is superb, packed with the matter of picaresque romance: blood, lust, adventure, vulgarity, comedy, tragedy. For Robert Jordan, the young American from Montana, the lust and adventure are quickly drowned in blood. The comedy, as in other Hemingway fiction, is practically indistinguishable from the vulgarity, which in this case is a rich and indigenous peasant brand. The tragedy is present and only too plain; the bell that began tolling in Madrid four years ago is audible everywhere today.

It is fourteen years since "The Sun Also Rises" and eleven since "A Farewell to Arms." More than three hundred years ago John Donne said, "No man is an Iland, intire of it selfe; every man is a peece of the Continent, a part of the maine. * * * And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee." Mr. Hemingway has taken this text and, out of his experiences, convictions and great gifts, built on it his finest novel.

It was a brutal war between the legitimate, democratically-elected government of the Second Spanish Republic, which had ties to communism, and the rebellion led by the future fascist dictator Francisco Franco. Hemingway was hardly neutral. He never in his life felt as passionately about politics or government as he did the cause of the left-leaning Republic. The wartime film he helped create, The Spanish Earth, is unapologetic propaganda. His war correspondence did not bother to feign neutrality.

In one scene, the pro-Republican protagonist makes an assumption about the cruelty and arrogance of an enemy lieutenant simply because of the nationalism for which the lieutenant fights. The passage then instantly and radically switches perspectives to that of the lieutenant, whom Hemingway shows to be a reluctant and humble soldier. A kind, intelligent, and decent man.

"For whom the bell tolls"

25 years ago today (November 1st, 1996), I opened my little Martial Arts/ childcare business for the first time. United Tae Kwon-Do-Jones Rd. was born (actually just re-imagined as I was the 3rd proprietor of that particular location). I was a headstrong 19 year old who knew it all and nothing at all at the same time. Now that was a long time ago. Currently I'm reading Hemingway's For Whom The Bell Tolls which reminds me constantly of John Donne's great poem by the same name.

"No man is an island,

Entire of itself.

Each is a piece of the continent,

A part of the main.

If a clod be washed away by the sea,

Europe is the less.

As well as if a promontory were.

As well as if a manor of thine own

Or of thine friend's were.

Each man's death diminishes me,

For I am involved in mankind.

Therefore, send not to know

For whom the bell tolls,

It tolls for thee."

The essential idea provoked from the poem is that the ringing of the bell, indicating a death, cannot mean anything except your impending death due to your connection with your fellow man. What a morbid and frightening notion! But I can't help but look back at the last quarter century without just thinking about the connections I've made and the people who made such a long stint in business possible. Everyone from mentors and fellow instructors, to family members and business partners, to customers, kids, and dearly loved-employees, they've all touched my life and enriched me in profound ways. Along the way I've met some of the finest people who have molded my thinking and helped me to see the world in a much larger way than I ever imagined. Frankly, my list of thank yous would be much too long. Sufficed to say, that I've been greatly blessed beyond what I deserve. As I edge toward the next phase of life and business, I pause to hear the sound of the bell as it rings. Though I'm no younger (and I think: no fool), the sound of the bell ringing was never sweeter. By the grace of God and with a little help from my friends, I celebrate 25 years of absolute pleasure in serving my students and families. May God bless all of you richly as you have done so for me.

Sincerely,

Joshua Hong

The dispute revolves around a commercial case where the claimant requested compensation for uncollected tolls under a toll concession agreement, which provided for compensation mechanisms that the respondent allegedly failed to apply. The Municipality argued that the concession agreement was null and void due to the presence of corruption, among other grounds. Ultimately the Tribunal held that there were insufficient red flags directly related to the concession agreement and rejected the corruption allegations. This award demonstrates that the presence of red flags is not enough to prove corruption. The proponent must prove a causal link between those flags and the event under analysis.

Yesterday was the first day in more than a month that I didn't watch a film. Instead, I chose to spend the holiday with my parents, whom I love very much and don't get as many opportunities to see as I would like. I ate a huge meal and was sent back with heaps of leftovers. Now, I can safely sequester myself away to watch a bunch of old movies practically nobody cares about ... but with a 2.5 gallon Ziploc bag full of ham. ff782bc1db
