West Altadena, a historically Black and brown community, was burning and LA County refused to respond.
Reporters from the LA Times investigated the county’s fire response and alarming findings revealed that:
Despite deploying over 100 fire trucks to fight the fires in Palisades and East Altadena, only one fire truck was stationed in West Altadena.
19 people died in the Eaton Fire. 18 of those deaths happened in West Altadena after calls for help went unanswered.
Los Angeles’ Sheriff’s Department (LASD) would not respond or cooperate with the fire response data request from the LA Times.
Black Altadena families paid the fatal cost of the LA Sheriff's Department’s negligence in issuing evacuation notices. Moreover, residents of West Altadena are also discouraged from filing lawsuits against LA county and pursuing legal options that could provide justice.
We need California Attorney General Rob Bonta to stand on the right side of justice and establish lines of accountability and transparency between county officials and our community!
