Collection of most popular free to download fonts for Windows and Mac. This free fonts collection also offers useful content and a huge collection of TrueType face and OpenType font families categorized in alphabetical order.

I will preface this by mentioning that "FON" has become a somewhat common file extension for several different font formats. By far the most common is Microsoft's, but there are other files calling themselves FON which use a completely different format. So you may want to double-check that. The information I include below is only about the Microsoft format.

FON is actually just EXE format, which is to say: FON files are EXEs that contain font resources (and only font resources), renamed with file extension FON. There is more information about that in this very old documentation written around the time FON was introduced.

Essentially what you do is create your FNT resources, then compile them as if they were a Windows Executable (you may include several FNTs in a FON; typically what is done is to package multiple sizes of the same font into a single FON).

FON is a font file format native to Microsoft Windows. It began to be marginalized as of Windows 3.1, with the introduction of TrueType, though it continues to be supported. It contains fonts in FNT format. As such, it supports both bitmapped and stroked fonts; but aside from the stroked fonts included with Windows (Modern, Roman, and Script), it is used almost exclusively for bitmapped fonts. It is sometimes even called Windows bitmapped font format.

"Spidey's ZDoom Font Generator," or "doomfontgen," generates bitmaps from system fonts which can be converted for use in Doom engines supporting zdoom-style "font lumps." This can be done by using the utility "imagetool," which can be found at zdoom.org. (note: imagetool is now integrated and distributed with doomfontgen!)

This tool can create images suitable for "console fonts" (FON1) or "big fonts" (FON2). Images can be saved as high-color PNG (for editing) or paletted PCX (for direct import into imagetool). Images can also be saved directly as font lumps. Doomfontgen can also create "embedded" / STCFN* font images (several images , each representing a single character).

One of the largest type distributors, Adobe has greatly influenced the evolution of digital type. Adobe's key contributions include the PostScript, Multiple Master and OpenType formats and a large collection of fonts considered by many designers to be graphic standards.

A file with .fon extension is a Microsoft Windows 3.x font library that is actually an executable file but renamed to .fon. It is a collection of .fnt files in itself and applications reference it while accessing system font. That is why it acts as a resource file. It can be opened on Windows OS using Microsoft Windows Font View application.

A FON file contains font resources and has Resource (.res) file format. The .res file format specifies the file header as well as data section specifications. A .fnt is also a resource data file that is included with a resource file. FON files have binary file format and have application/octet-stream MIME type.

Font resources, unlike other type of resources, are not added to the resources of an application. Instead they are added to the EXE files and renamed to .fon files, resulting in library files instead of applications. Multiple Individual fonts constitute components of a font group where each group follows a resource group structure. Font resources use these resource group structures. The group header has all the information that is required to access a specific font from the group. A font component resource has the following format.

A similar genetic mechanism to regulate stem cell maintenance seems to be conserved in monocots. Mutations in the FON1 and FON2 genes in rice cause enlargement of the FM, resulting in an increase in the number of floral organs such as stamens and carpels [7],[8],[19],[20]. A double mutant of fon1 and fon2 shows no additive phenotype, suggesting that the two genes act in the same genetic pathway [8]. FON1 encodes a receptor-like kinase with a leucine-rich repeat (LRR) structure in the extracellular domain that is closely related to Arabidopsis CLV1 [7]. FON2 is a member of the CLE gene family, and the CLE domain of FON2 is similar to that of CLV3 [8],[21]. Likewise, in maize (Zea mays), the thick tassel dwarf1 (td1) gene encodes a CLV1-like receptor kinase, and the fasciated ear2 (fea2) gene, like Arabidopsis CLV2, encodes an LRR protein that lacks a cytoplasmic domain [22],[23]. Loss of function of these genes results in enlargement of the inflorescence meristem (IM) and the FM, causing fasciation of the inflorescences and an increase in floral organ number in maize. Constitutive expression of the FON2 gene results in a severe decrease in the number of flowers and floral organs, probably because of a reduction in the size of the IM and the FM in rice, resulting in a phenotype similar to the wus flower [8],[11]. The effect of FON2 overexpression is not observed in the fon1 mutant, suggesting that FON1 is a putative receptor of FON2. Thus, CLV-related genes negatively regulate stem cell proliferation in the reproductive meristems in both rice and maize, as they do in Arabidopsis.

Despite this conservation, meristems in the vegetative phase are not affected by mutations in these CLV-related genes in the grasses, unlike in Arabidopsis [7],[8],[22],[23]. In rice, constitutive expression of FON2 does not affect meristem maintenance in the vegetative phase [8],[24]. We previously showed that FCP1 is probably involved in stem cell maintenance in the vegetative SAM because constitutive expression of FCP1 causes consumption of the SAM, similar to overexpression of CLV3 in Arabidopsis [24]. This action of FCP1 is also observed in fon1 mutants, suggesting that FCP1 requires a receptor other than FON1. Thus, it is likely that, depending on the type of meristem, two independent pathways negatively regulate stem cell maintenance in rice. In maize, expression of td1 is excluded from the vegetative SAM [23]. Thus, meristem maintenance in the vegetative phase is regulated differently from that in the reproductive phase in the grasses.

There are two possible explanations for the redundancy of FOS1 and FON2. Both CLE peptides may be involved in the same pathway and may share their receptors. Alternatively, there may exist two independent pathways: one involving FOS1 and one involving FON2 as signaling molecules. Two experiments in this study supported the latter possibility. First, a genomic fragment containing indica FOS1 was able to rescue a severe mutant of fon1, in which the putative receptor of FON2 is defective [7]. Second, constitutive expression of indica FOS1 in fon1 mutant showed abnormal shoots, a phenotype that is similar to that of wild type overexpressing indica FOS1. These results suggest that FON1 is not required for FOS1 function and that the signaling pathways involving FON2 and FOS1 are independent of each other. Because wild species in the Oryza genus have no mutation in the functional region of FOS1, these two pathways may function in the FM in all Oryza species except for japonica (Figure 6).

A font can be embedded only if it containsa setting by the font vendor that permits it to be embedded. Embeddingprevents font substitution when readers view or print the file, and ensures that readers see the text in its original font. Embeddingincreases file size only slightly, unless the document uses CIDfonts. a font format commonly used for Asian languages. You canembed or substitute fonts in Acrobat or when you export an InDesigndocument to PDF.

If you have difficulty copying and pasting text from a PDF, first check if the problem font is embedded. Go to Document Properties from the hamburger menu (Windows) or the File menu (macOS). Then, select the Fonts tab in the Document Properties dialog box. For an embedded font, try changing the point where it's embedded rather than sending it inside the PostScript file. Distill the PDF without embedding that font. Then, open the PDF in Acrobat and embed the font using the Preflight fixup.

The Acrobat installation includes width-only versions of many common Chinese, Japanese, and Korean fonts, therefore Distiller can then access these fonts in Acrobat. Make sure that the fonts are available on your computer. (In Windows, choose Complete when you install Acrobat, or choose Custom and select the Asian Language Support option under the View Adobe PDF category. In Mac OS, these fonts are installed automatically.) ff782bc1db
