Science, Exploration, Education and storytelling using foldscopes in rural Kenya.

Project summary

This project is funded by National Geographic's COVID-19 Remote Learning Emergency Fund for Educators Grant. The main focus of this project was to design 10 lesson plans that would help bring the world of microscopy to students and help them bridge their personal experiences to a more global perspective on critical issues such as understanding the role of microorganisms in the ecosystem. We did this by providing students with direct access to the microscopic world using a flexible and easy-to-use Foldscope and developing curricula together with Science teachers. With the development of these resources, we now aim to disseminate these lesson plans and continue working with teachers to incorporate more microscopy exploratory activities into curricula. We also intend to grow educational activities that will help nurture a community of explorers in Africa and beyond that use resources that bring joy into learning.

Project Team

Michael Mumbo

Michael is National Geographic COVID-19 Remote Learning Emergency Fund recipient. He is an EdTech professional with a background in Mathematics and IT and the Co-founder and Executive Director of Edutab Africa. He is also a Columbia University Fablern Fellow working with Maker Educator in in Western Kenya.

Patrick Njoroge

Patrick is Edutab Africa's co-founder with an experience in International Development in Education sector and ICT4D . He is also a photographer, hiker, cycling, & nature enthusiast.

Sharon Jepkemboi

Sharon Jepkemboi has a background in Statistics with a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Statistics with I.T. from Maseno University. She has interests and expertise in data analytics.

Faith Wanja

Faith is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Cooperatives and Community Development at The Co-operative University of Kenya. Her interests are in Communication and Community Development.

Evans Odhiambo

Evans is the Data Lead at Edutab Africa with five years of experience in data management and quantitative research methods techniques. He is also a passionate data science educator.

Mercy Ouma

Mercy is a Biology and Chemistry educator who taught these subjects for 4 years in secondary school in Kenya. She has worked as a Research Assistant at the Institute of Primate Research, Nairobi. Her interests are in Community Work and Education Research.

Maxwell Fundi

Fundi is a Computer Scientist and a STEAM educator who is passionate about using technology to improve teaching and learning. He is also one of the co-founders of Edutab Africa.
