If you want a sophisticated, French-engineered soundstage with a luxurious build and active noise cancellation for critical listening in controlled spaces, choose Focal Elear High-Fidelity Open-Back; if you need a lightweight, highly sensitive planar magnetic driver that delivers massive sonic power from standard gear without the bulk of heavy headphones, choose HIFIMAN HE600.
Both of these headphones are built for audiophiles who demand absolute fidelity, yet they represent two very different philosophies on how to achieve it. The Focal Elear leans into a blend of high-end craftsmanship and acoustic research derived from its flagship Utopia line, offering a refined, detailed presentation wrapped in premium materials like aluminum and leather. It is a headphone designed for the dedicated listener who wants a sense of luxury and isolation from the outside world while maintaining an open-back design. On the other hand, the HIFIMAN HE600 focuses on engineering efficiency and weight reduction. By utilizing a rare-earth-free magnet system and a thinned-out diaphragm, it achieves sensitivity levels that rival systems driven by massive power amplifiers, all while being significantly lighter than its predecessors. This makes it a compelling choice for those who prioritize portability within the home studio or long listening sessions without neck fatigue.
• Focal Elear High-Fidelity Open-Back: Its biggest strength is the sophisticated combination of French manufacturing heritage, solid aluminum construction, and active noise cancellation features that make it ideal for focused environments. Its trade-off is a heavier overall mass and a design that prioritizes closed-environment control over extreme portability.
• HIFIMAN HE600: Its biggest strength is the advanced planar magnetic technology that delivers high sensitivity and a wide frequency range (8Hz-65kHz) in a package that is 20% lighter than previous models due to rotatable hinges and ergonomic redesign. Its trade-off is the lack of active noise cancellation and a plastic enclosure that, while functional, lacks the tactile luxury of metal and leather.
• Who is the Focal pick for? Audiophiles seeking a premium, durable build with a focus on low-noise environments and a sound signature inspired by high-end flagships.
• Who is the HIFIMAN pick for? Audiophiles who want powerful, detailed sound from standard amplifiers and need a comfortable, lightweight headset for extended use.
The Focal Elear is a headphone that speaks directly to the enthusiast who values the tangible quality of their equipment as much as the audio itself. Designed and manufactured in France, this circum-aural model carries the weight of more than 35 years of expertise, translating into a device that feels substantial and purpose-built. The mechanical design utilizes a solid aluminum yoke paired with a genuine leather headband, creating a pure, technophile aesthetic that signals serious intent. If you are an audiophile looking for a pair of best head phones for audiophiles that also serve as a statement piece on your desk, the Elear fits that niche perfectly. It is not merely a tool for sound reproduction; it is a crafted object intended for hours of listening pleasure.

The acoustic performance is where the Elear truly aims to impress. It draws inspiration from the Utopia, Focal's flagship model, bringing that same level of acoustic research down to a more accessible form factor. The result is a high-fidelity open-back experience that offers exceptional clarity and detail. Because it is an open-back design, it excels in low-noise environments where you can fully appreciate the spatial imaging and natural instrument separation. However, the inclusion of active noise cancellation capabilities adds a layer of versatility that many traditional open-backs lack, allowing you to manage external distractions even when the earcups are open. This feature makes it particularly suitable for users who want to immerse themselves in music without completely surrendering to their surroundings, bridging the gap between open-air acoustics and practical utility.
However, the Elear is not without its constraints. At 5.7 pounds, it is a heavier unit compared to many competitors, which might be a consideration for those with sensitive necks during marathon listening sessions. The design is clearly optimized for stationary use rather than travel. While the leather and aluminum suggest durability and longevity, the open-back nature means it will leak sound and let ambient noise in, making it unsuitable for public transit or noisy offices. It is a headphone for the quiet room, the home studio, or the dedicated listening nook. If you are someone who appreciates the "ipx7 waterproof in ear headphones for audiophiles" concept but needs full-size coverage, you must understand that the Elear is strictly a dry, indoor environment device. It demands a quiet space to shine, but in return, it offers a rich, sophisticated sound profile backed by a build quality that feels like it will last a lifetime.
The HIFIMAN HE600 represents a re-invention of the classic planar magnetic formula, focusing heavily on efficiency and comfort. Founded by Dr. Fang Bian, HIFIMAN has long been a leader in high-performance audio, and the HE600 continues that legacy by tackling one of the biggest complaints about planar drivers: their tendency to be heavy and power-hungry. With a new second-generation ergonomic headband and rotatable hinges, HIFIMAN managed to reduce the weight by 20 grams, resulting in a total mass of just 0.39 kg. This reduction is significant because it allows for longer listening sessions without the fatigue that often accompanies heavy, clamping headphones. For the audiophile who spends hours dissecting complex tracks, this weight reduction is a game-changer that makes the HE600 feel almost unnoticeable on the head.
Sonic performance is equally impressive, thanks to the Neo Supernano diaphragm Gen.2. This diaphragm is achieved at 60% of the thickness of the first-generation product, which likely contributes to faster transient response and lower distortion. The most striking feature here is the enhanced magnet system, which uses rare-earth-free permanent magnetic materials. Despite this material change, the sensitivity reaches 94dB, matching or approaching the performance of drivers that rely on rare-earth magnets. This means you do not need a wall-sized amplifier to drive these cans; standard headphone amplifiers can deliver sonic performance comparable to power amplifier-driven systems. The frequency response spans an incredible 8Hz to 65kHz, ensuring that both the deepest sub-bass and the highest treble details are rendered with precision. If you are an audiophile looking for anc true wireless earbuds for audiophiles, you might think of them, but for full-size fidelity, the HE600 offers a wired connection that ensures zero latency and maximum dynamic range.
The HE600 is designed for the listener who wants technical prowess without the physical burden. The plastic enclosure, while less luxurious than the aluminum of the Focal, serves a functional purpose in keeping the weight down. It is a silver, over-ear design that looks modern and clean. However, the lack of active noise cancellation is a deliberate choice here; HIFIMAN prioritizes the raw, uncolored open-back experience. This makes the HE600 ideal for quiet rooms where you want to hear every nuance of the recording without any electronic processing interfering with the signal path. It replicates the sound signature of the legendary HE6 headphones but with improved reliability and comfort. It is the choice for the purist who wants to hear the music exactly as the engineer intended, delivered through a system that is easy on the neck and demanding only a modest amount of power to reach its full potential.

The reason is simple: the combination of ultra-high sensitivity and significant weight reduction solves the two biggest pain points of owning high-end planar magnetic headphones. While the Focal Elear is undeniably beautiful and well-crafted, the HE600's ability to deliver massive, detailed sound from a standard amplifier without weighing down your neck is a more practical advantage for daily listening. It feels like a smarter engineering solution for the modern audiophile who values performance per gram. Both are excellent choices for serious listeners, but the HE600 offers a balance of power, detail, and comfort that makes it the superior value for anyone building a high-fidelity system today.
Neither model is ideal for travel. Both are open-back designs that leak sound and allow ambient noise in, making them unsuitable for noisy environments like airplanes or trains. They are strictly for quiet, private listening spaces.
The HIFIMAN HE600 is designed to work well with standard headphone amplifiers due to its high sensitivity (94dB), whereas the Focal Elear, while capable, is part of a high-end lineage that often benefits from robust power sources to fully utilize its dynamic range.
The Focal Elear uses a solid aluminum yoke and a leather headband for a premium, durable feel, while the HIFIMAN HE600 utilizes a plastic enclosure to keep the weight down and improve comfort during long sessions.
Yes, the open-back design provides an expansive soundstage that enhances immersion in games and films. However, because they are open-back, others in the room will hear what you hear, so they are best used in private spaces.
