If you want exceptional sound isolation and a luxurious, portable experience for your daily commute or a focused session in a noisy gym like basketball courts, choose Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back; if you need pure, uncolored audio transparency for critical studio work where noise leakage is not a concern, choose Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA.
• Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back: Its greatest strength lies in its premium French craftsmanship and superior passive noise isolation via a closed-back design, making it ideal for active environments; however, it trades off some of the ultra-wide frequency extension found in open designs.
• Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA: This model excels with its featherlight 199g build and expansive open-back acoustic performance that offers incredible detail retrieval; yet, this openness means zero noise isolation, rendering it unsuitable for loud settings like a basketball court.
• The Verdict on Fit: The Focal is the pick for the music lover who needs to block out the world, while the Audio-Technica is strictly for the engineer or audiophile seeking an accurate reference monitor in a quiet room.
The Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back is engineered for the listener who refuses to compromise on sound quality while demanding comfort during extended wear. At its heart is a unique Aluminum/Magnesium "M" dome speaker, a driver technology developed by Focal's acoustic specialists to deliver precise, clear, and immersive high-fidelity audio. When I look at the specifications, the frequency response spans from 15 Hz to 22 kHz, which tells me this unit is capable of handling deep bass and crisp highs with harmonic distortion rates kept below 0.3% at 1 kHz. This level of precision is what separates a casual listening device from a true hi-fi instrument.
What truly sets this headphone apart for the active user, including someone looking for the best over ear headphones for basketball practice or training, is its physical construction and isolation capabilities. The closed-back enclosure is not just a design choice; it provides essential sound insulation. Unlike open-back models that leak sound and let outside noise in, the AZURYS creates a barrier that lets you focus entirely on the music, even when the environment around you is chaotic. The weight is listed at 0.31 kg (310 grams), which feels substantial but balanced thanks to the magnesium yoke. This lightweight yet ergonomic structure ensures the fit remains secure without causing fatigue during long sessions.

Comfort is another pillar of the Focal design. The headband features genuine leather, paired with breathable braided textile and memory foam earpads. This combination suggests a premium tactile experience designed for insulation and softness against the skin. For anyone who wears glasses or has sensitive ears, these materials promise a much more forgiving fit than hard plastic alternatives. The blue finish, inspired by the azurite stone, adds a layer of aesthetic elegance that feels both modern and timeless. Whether you are commuting, working in a busy office, or engaging in sports activities where you need to hear your playlist clearly above the ambient noise, this pair is built to handle the demands of a dynamic lifestyle. It is the right choice if you value the ability to control your sonic environment and appreciate the heritage of French manufacturing.
The Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA is a different beast entirely, designed specifically for professionals who require absolute neutrality in their monitoring. As a flagship open-back reference headphone, its primary purpose is to reveal every nuance in a recording without coloring the sound. The fully open-back design allows unrestricted airflow, which eliminates internal resonance and provides an extremely quick transient response. This means the sound moves exactly as it should, with realistic sound staging and depth that closed-back designs often struggle to replicate. If you are a producer, mixer, or musician needing to make critical decisions about a track, this is the tool you reach for.
However, the very feature that makes it great for the studio—its openness—is its fatal flaw for almost any other use case. The design relies solely on the performance of the driver, translating diaphragm movement directly into sound without acoustic cavities. While this results in authentic, natural sound with minimal distortion, it also means there is zero noise isolation. You will hear everything happening around you, and everyone around you will hear your music leaking out. This makes it completely unsuitable for public spaces, gyms, or any situation where privacy or concentration is needed. In fact, trying to use these for basketball or outdoor exercise would be counterproductive, as the ambient noise would drown out the subtle details they are so good at revealing.
Physically, the ATH-R70XA is a marvel of engineering, weighing in at a mere 199 grams. This featherlight design, constructed with carbon composite resin and metal reinforcement, ensures that it stays comfortable for hours of intensive studio work. The replaceable velour earpads contribute to this comfort, offering a soft seal that doesn't trap heat, though again, this does not provide isolation. The impedance is a high 470 ohms, which indicates that this unit is not meant to be driven by a standard smartphone or laptop headphone jack; it requires a dedicated amplifier to perform at its best. With a frequency range extending from 5 Hz to 40,000 Hz, it captures a vast spectrum of audio, far beyond the human hearing threshold in some directions, ensuring no detail is lost. This is a specialist tool for the quietest of rooms, where accuracy is the only metric that matters.
• Best for Noise Isolation → Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back, because its sealed enclosure blocks external sound effectively.
• Best for Open Soundstage → Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA, due to its open-back architecture that eliminates internal resonance.
• Best for Active Use (e.g., Basketball) → Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back, as it keeps music audible and contained in a noisy environment.
• Best for Studio Reference → Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA, given its professional-grade accuracy and 470-ohm impedance for critical listening.
• Best Weight → Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA at 199g, compared to the Focal's 310g, making it significantly lighter for long sessions.
• Best Driver Material → Focal AZURYS uses Aluminum/Magnesium "M" domes for clarity, while Audio-Technica focuses on pure transducer performance.
• Best Portability → Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back, since you can wear them anywhere without disturbing others or hearing distractions.
• Best Amplification Needs → Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA requires a powerful amp due to high impedance, whereas Focal is easier to drive.
After analyzing the technical specifications and intended use cases, I am choosing the Focal AZURYS High-Fidelity Closed-Back for the general buyer who wants a versatile, high-quality listening experience. The Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA is undeniably impressive for its specific niche of studio monitoring, but its lack of isolation and high impedance requirements limit its utility for most people. For someone looking for the best bone conduction headphones for basketball or simply a reliable pair to wear in a busy world, the Focal wins hands down. Its ability to isolate sound while delivering French-engineered fidelity makes it the practical choice. I recommend the Focal AZURYS for anyone who needs to block out the chaos of life and immerse themselves in music, whether they are traveling, working, or playing sports.
Only the Focal AZURYS is suitable because its closed-back design provides the necessary noise isolation to hear your music in a loud gym. The Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA is an open-back model that leaks sound and lets in too much noise for active sports.
Yes, the Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA has a high impedance of 470 ohms, which typically requires a dedicated amplifier to drive the speakers properly and achieve full volume. The Focal AZURYS has a lower impedance of 26 ohms and is easier to power with standard devices.
Both offer excellent comfort, but for different reasons. The Focal AZURYS uses memory foam and genuine leather for a plush feel, while the Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA is significantly lighter at 199g, reducing pressure on the head. However, the Focal's closed design may trap more heat over time compared to the breathable open-back of the Audio-Technica.
No, the open-back design of the Audio-Technica ATH-R70XA allows sound to leak out freely, meaning people around you will hear your music. The Focal AZURYS is the correct choice for shared spaces because its closed-back construction contains the audio within the earcups.
