What is a Docent? A Docent is a volunteer who leads the artist presentation in the classroom. In the GRACE Art Docent Program, parents present the digital images of works of art to the Fox Mill Elementary classrooms and give a brief presentation and lead in creating a project. Docents can download all the necessary presentation information, grade-appropriate power points, artist handouts, and project materials for the entire artist lesson. No prior art background is needed.

Please encourage other parents in your child's class (Moms and Dads alike) to be handy helpers. Explain the role to them: they show up a few minutes early to find out details about the class' project, help set up project materials, and assist while student assemble project (get extra supplies etc). Please emphasize that there is no art experience necessary and that they would only offer an hour or so of their time.

Feel free to create individual classroom sign ups - this helps promote additional help in classrooms. For example you may only need 1-2 docents per class to present the lesson but can invite your entire class to be a handy-helper. Using a personalized sign up for your classroom really helps you get at least 4-6 helpers for each Grace Art lesson (which is a huge help with grades K-2).

GRACE Art is an enrichment program sponsored by the Greater Reston Arts Center (GRACE) and the Fox Mill PTA. Parent volunteer docents visit classrooms to present a 10-15 minute discussion on an artist or art-related topic and help the students create their own works of art. The art-related topics vary each project. No art background required to volunteer. Please contact FMESGraceArts@gmail.com for further information.

Volunteer opportunities:

GRACE Art Grade Level Coordinators

Be the point of contact for teachers to make sure they have a Docent and "Helping Hand" volunteers in each classroom; Assist Class Docents with Signup Genius and volunteers as needed; Work with teachers in the grade to finalize Grace Art time slot selections as needed.

GRACE Art Docents

Introduce the topic through a 10-15 minute pre-made Power-Point presentation, and then guide the children through a fun, hands-on art project using materials we make available to you.

GRACE Art Helping Hands

Assist the docent by helping the children with the hands-on art projects after the artist presentation; Help to distribute art materials and encourage the children with their artwork.

To sign up to volunteer and be added to our Grace Art email distro, please visit: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/70A0C4BADA92FA2F85-fmes or send us an email at fmesgracearts@gmail.com.

Our first artist presentation will be Eric Carle, beginning October 9th. Please check the FMES GRACE Art website for the presentation calendar. The calendar will be available by the first week of October.

Thank you! We are looking forward to a great year!
