To mark the end of the implementation of the Visayan Sea Closed Season, BFAR 6 organized a virtual program last February 15, 2022 with the theme “Visayan Sea Aton Ginbatayan, Epekto sang Pagpahuway aton Matilawan” to thank fisherfolk organizations, enforcement partners, and local government units who took the lead in the implementation of FAO 167 – 3.

Fisheries Administrative Order (FAO) 167 series of 1989, as amended by FAO 167-3 series of 2013 re-established the closed season for the conservation of sardines, herrings, and mackerels in the portion of Visayan Sea from November 15 to February 15 every year. It covers a vast area of roughly 5,800 square kilometers covering the municipal and national waters of Masbate, Capiz, Iloilo, Negros Occidental and Cebu. This fisheries policy aims for the conservation of the aforementioned species during the spawning and juvenile growth development season to increase productivity being the major fish species of Visayan Sea.

BFAR VI also commends partner Local Government Units (LGUs), Bantay Dagat Teams and National Government Law Enforcement agencies for their outstanding support, assistance, and contributions during the implementation of FAO 167-3. These individual and group efforts have one way or another contributed to the sustainable management of our fisheries resources in the Visayan Sea.
