Introduction

Fluent includes a dictionary called Wordnet, which was created and hosted by Princeton University. Fluent also supports the installation of additional custom dictionaries made by users in the Fluent community.

This support note documents the details of installing a custom dictionary. It looks tricky, but if you are patient, read and follow the steps, you will succeed.

Steps to Install a Custom Dictionary

    1. Copy any custom dictionaries you have into the Fluent folder on your device. To find the Fluent folder:

      • on iPhone or iPad, open the Files app and find the folder either called “On my iPhone” on the iPhone or "On my iPad" on the iPad. This is the folder where you should copy custom dictionary files.

      • on a Mac, go into Settings of the Fluent app and click on "Open the document folder for Fluent Dictionary" link. This will open in Finder the folder where the custom dictionary files need to be copied.

    2. If Fluent is open on your device, close the Fluent app so it is no longer running.

    3. Now restart Fluent.

      • All your custom dictionaries will be imported into the Fluent primary database. This process can take a minute or two.

      • After custom dictionaries are imported, they are copied to a subfolder called Imported.

        • Note: If the import succeeds, these files can be deleted if you don't want to keep them on your device, since they were copied into the primary Fluent database.

Technical Notes:

  • Custom dictionaries are not synced via iCloud, rather need to be installed on each device where they will be used.
