Why Languages Matter: Representations of Linguistic Diversity in the US Media (3 credits)

Delivered in English, this course introduces students to linguistic diversity in the US by analyzing the intersection between language and ideological constructions, e.g., the objectification of Latino women, discrimination and stereotypes of South-East Asian peoples, ideas of Japanese culture and society in anime, as well as how self-representation empowers communities in a range of media (music, tv series, film, street art, installations, and social media). Students will engage in fieldwork to document the linguistic diversity of Omaha in an interactive website (created for us by Geography students), and develop a story map of cultural diversity in our sity. We will engage with local cultural media organizations to experience this linguistic richness first hand.
