Judith Crossley Memorial - Songwriting Award

Call for expressions of interest to form a Committee

We are calling for expressions of interest to form a Committee to maintain the running of the Judith Crossley Memorial Songwriting Award

The Judith Crossley Memorial Songwriting Award has been held annually at the Fleurieu Folk Festival for the past four years, since 2015.

The Award was founded through a legacy left by the late Judith Crossley, who passed away in 2014. The Award was founded to encourage the writing of new songs based on the stories of South Australia’s people and places, in the folk and blues genres. Since its foundation, more than 70 songwriters have entered more than 80 songs in the competition, each of them endeavouring to tell a story or record a comment about South Australian life.

Judith was a well-known and much-loved figure in the folk and Songwriting communities of South Australia after migrating here from Britain in the early 1960s. She was herself a fine songwriter, and during her life, she encouraged many people to take up performing and writing. The Judith Crossley Memorial Songwriting Award aims to continue this important work.

We are calling for expressions of interest to form a Committee to maintain the running of the Judith Crossley Memorial Songwriting Award into the future.

People who join this Committee will play a vital role in encouraging the writing of new songs in traditional genres, and in fostering the age-old tradition of songwriters as social commentator and storyteller – things that were close to Judith Crossley’s heart.

We are looking for Committee members who can offer:

  • Commitment to the Award’s aims and purposes
  • Familiarity with the folk and/or blues genres
  • Familiarity with social media and other forms of promotion/publicity
  • Fundraising and sponsorship skills/experience
  • Computer literacy

Committee members should be prepared to commit for a twelve-month period or longer in the first instance. The meeting schedule and workload will not be onerous, and there is an established work cycle in place. The Committee will have the ability to bring in additional people to assist with its work as needed. There is no requirement for a Committee member to be a performer or a songwriter.

If you are interested in joining the Committee, please send an email to songwritingaward@gmail.com with a brief outline of your background and skills.

Expressions of interest must be received by midnight on Monday 10 December 2018.
