The Xbox One version of FlatOut 4 features 45 Achievements worth a total of 1,000 Gamerscore. These involve all the usual Career completion objects like finishing every cup with a gold, buying and upgrading every car, and more. You also have to earn Gold ratings on all 42 FlatOut Mode events, which could take quite a while.
Online Multiplayer Achievements rear their head as well. You have to win 20 Assault Mode races and 25 total online races, so Assault Mode is probably what everyone will play. Factor in numerous Achievements for damaging or destroying opponents in certain ways, and you have a time-consuming, but not impossible list of objectives.
Total insanity. The definition of total insanity is complete or absolute foolishness or irrationality. There's little doubt that this is an apt description of FlatOut 4. The title revolves around madness, wanton destruction and the carnage that follows. It certainly works in delivering the promise the title gives, though not always for the reasons you would expect.
The FLATOUT series has never taken itself seriously and it doesn't need to. The fourth entry adds more of the same type stunts, races, derbies, and pure.. well, Total Insanity that fits the usually bill but adds just enough polish and fun to make it worth while. Realistic driving sim it's not but where in lacks in simulation, it makes up in spades as you crash, bash, smash, and wreck your way through a ton of nitro filled insanity. It's a total hoot.
Flatout 4: Total Insanity is naturally (as the name suggests) packed full of total insanity on four wheels. It took exactly four seconds of the first race before the sparks hit the side of our car because aggressive opponents rubbed up against us as if we were their good luck charm. This isn't a game that tries to simulate any type of realistic car physics, though - not even a little. It felt like our car weighs ten tons when trying to corner, but when we got hit, it might as well have been made of cardboard. That old balance of skidding, sliding, and the weight of the car from the old games is nowhere to be seen. Now everything feels random instead. No matter how we perform, for instance, we're always depending on things that are beyond our control, and our car has a tendency to end up on its side with incredible frequency, as if the doors were made of cast iron.
Usually starting at the top of a huge stunt ramp, you put your foot down, use some nitrous oxide to get up to an insane speed, slam on the brakes and watch your guy smash through the windshield and fly off towards whichever minigame setup you have chosen. There are 12 to choose from in total, including golf, long jump, billiards, cup pong, rings of fire, soccer, baseball and curling. The various party games and stunts are a great distraction from the intense racing found in the Career mode, and when put together create an overall varied, great value package.
