Our Mission
The FLAME Lab at UCR is committed to improving literacy development and educational success for students with diverse learning profiles. Our work advances equitable early identification and effective instruction through the development of innovative assessments and evidence-based interventions that support both cognitive and motivational needs.
Our Research Aims
Our work contributes to the evolving knowledge base on evidence-based practices that support literacy development by developing, refining, and testing assessments and interventions that address both cognitive processes and student motivation.
Methodologically, we primarily use quantitative research designs and statistical modeling to examine learning and development over time, complemented by qualitative approaches that capture students’ lived experiences and the contexts that shape learning.
Our Research Questions
We aim to make a meaningful, positive impact on students with diverse learning needs by addressing the following research questions:
1. What cognitive, motivational, and contextual factors support literacy development across learners?
2. How can we design screening and identification systems that recognize students’ needs at earlier grades and support them through timely and appropriate instruction?
3. Which evidence-based instructional practices most effectively improve literacy outcomes, and how can motivational and social–emotional supports be embedded to strengthen engagement and learning?
