Since first being raised on June 25, 1978, at UN Plaza in San Francisco, the rainbow Pride flag has been hoisted up flag poles and some of the highest mountain tops around the world. Pride flags fly in front of homes, businesses, and government buildings. In the United States, many local, state, and federal buildings fly the Pride flag during the month of June in commemoration and celebration of Pride month.
But this tradition is under threat by opponents who view the flag as a threat and some are seeking bans to prohibit public flag poles from flying this flag. In some countries, the risk of flying the Pride flag comes with possible arrest or violence.
