From knowledge to policies

A Governance Approach to Bridge the Gap to Enhance Access to Clean Water in Indonesia

Access to clean water is one of the sustainable development goals of the United Nations. The UN even adopted a Resolution that defines the right to water and sanitation as a human right. With that it becomes interesting to see whether or not the legal infrastructure can contribute to the accessibility of water. It appears that the factors that lead to pollution of water sources (like rivers) are often known. There is quite some technical data on the causes and consequences of water pollution. What lacks is the effective mechanism to put this knowledge into policies. That is why a research consortium with partners from the Netherlands (University of Groningen and Radboud University Nijmegen) and Indonesia (Institut Technologi Bandung and Sebelas Maret University in Surakarta) will join in researching the following research question:

How can the Indonesian government effectively realise the right to fresh water?

This project is funded by the KNAW and will take place in 2020.

The activities in this project include an expert meeting (March 2020) in Indonesia, an assessment of the case law, a round table (June 2020) and a research visit of the Indonesian partners to the Netherlands to enhance the collaboration between the institutes and to work on shared publications.

On this website we will post updates on the activities in this project.
