Is Windows Update refusing to download or install the latest patches? Seeing the frustrating error code 0x80240034? You’re not alone. This common issue usually means the update download failed — often because of a corrupted cache, stuck services, or a temporary glitch.
Microsoft lists this code as WU_E_DOWNLOAD_FAILED. Windows started downloading an update but couldn’t finish the job. Common causes include:
Corrupted files in the Windows Update cache
Windows Update or BITS services stuck in a bad state
Network interruptions during download
Damaged system files
This single method clears the damaged download cache and forces Windows to start fresh.
Press the Windows key, type cmd, right-click Command Prompt, and choose Run as administrator.
Copy and paste these commands one by one, pressing Enter after each:
text
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
Now rename the cache folders:
text
ren %systemroot%\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%\System32\catroot2 catroot2.bak
Restart the services:
text
net start cryptsvc
net start bits
net start wuauserv
Restart your computer, then go to Settings → Windows Update and click Check for updates.
That’s it. In the majority of cases the error disappears and the update downloads cleanly.
If the quick reset didn’t work, try these in order:
Run the built-in troubleshooter
Windows 11: Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Windows Update → Run
Windows 10: Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Additional troubleshooters → Windows Update
Repair system files
Open Command Prompt as administrator again and run:
text
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait until it finishes, then run:
text
sfc /scannow
Restart and try Windows Update once more.
Manual installation
Note the KB number of the failed update from Update history, then download it directly from the Microsoft Update Catalog and install it yourself.
Make sure you have a stable internet connection and enough free disk space.
Temporarily disable third-party antivirus while updating.
Avoid interrupting the process once the update starts downloading again.
