Folklorist Norm Cohen writes that 900 miles, rather than 500, is the most common distance referenced in versions of the traditional song, but other distances including 400 miles and 10,000 miles also appear.[7]

In Finnish, the song has been recorded under at least five different song titles.[27] In 1963 Erkki Pohjanheimo recorded the song under title "Juna jtt laiturin" (English: "The Train Leaves the Platform"). Lyrics were written by Reino Helismaa. Pohjanheimo recorded the song from its French title "J'entends siffler le train", and it was on the B side of a 7" single called "Kutsukaa Tri Casey" (almost direct translation from "Callin' Dr. Casey", a hit by John D. Loudermilk).[28][27] The following year, a Finnish vocal quartet Nelj Penni (English: Four Pennies) recorded a 7" single that consisted of two songs: "Washington Square" on the A side, and on the flip side there was a Finnish version of "500 Miles" under the title "Pitkt illat" (English: "The Long Evenings"), lyrics by Sauvo Puhtila.[29][27] Also in 1964, another version of the song was recorded by folk-spirited trio Anki, Bosse & Robert and titled "Viimeinen vihellys" (English: "The Last Whistle"), lyrics by Juha Vainio. "Viimeinen vihellys" was also a 7" single B side, on the A side there was Will Holt's song "Lemon Tree" (Finnish: "Sitruunapuu"). "Viimeinen vihellys" was released also on their self-titled record in 1965.[30][31][27] In 1979, the song was recorded yet again, by Jukka Raitanen. This time it was called "Liian kaukana" (English: "Too Far Away"). Lyrics were written by Raul Reiman. This song was released on Raitanen's album Ylinjalla. "Ylinjalla(in)" song is a Finnish version of the song "I Walk the Line" by Johnny Cash.[32]

We began the Camino on September 14, 2016 ( Holy Cross Day). After a long trek across the Pyrenees mountains from St.-Jean-Pied-de-Port, France we arrived in Roncesvalles, Spain. In Roncesvalles I spent some time alone in a thirteenth century chapel gazing on a medieval crucifix. While sitting in this dimly lit sanctuary the Holy Spirit seemed to give me four instructions for my five hundred mile walk:

1. Enter every church you can.

The final observation from five hundred miles of crucifixes is that most of them were artistically beautiful. Of course, this is a very strange thing. On a purely objective level there is nothing beautiful about the sight of man being tortured to death. And yet beauty is present in the crucifixion of Jesus, and artists render us a great service by calling our attention to it. Shining through the grotesque ugliness of human torture and murder is the beauty of divine love and forgiveness.

An intimate, funny, and poignant travel memoir following New York Times bestselling author and actor Andrew McCarthy as he walks the Camino de Santiago with his son Sam.

When Andrew McCarthy's eldest son began to take his first steps into adulthood, McCarthy found himself wishing time would slow down. Looking to create a more meaningful connection with Sam before he fled the nest, as well as recreate his own life-altering journey decades before, McCarthy decided the two of them should set out on a trek like few others: 500 miles across Spain's Camino de Santiago.

Over the course of the journey, the pair traversed an unforgiving landscape, having more honest conversations in five weeks than they'd had in the preceding two decades. Discussions of divorce, the trauma of school, McCarthy's difficult relationship with his own father, fame, and Flaming Hot Cheetos threatened to either derail their relationship or cement it. Walking With Sam captures this intimate, candid and hopeful expedition as the father son duo travel across the country and towards one another.

He discusses his latest book, Walking with Sam: A Father, a Son, and Five Hundred Miles Across Spain, the poignant account of a five-week pilgrimage he made along the historic Camino de Santiago with his young adult son Sam.

The large shrub pictured is never intentionally watered (it was when young, of course) and is growing in fairly disgusting soil. It took its time deciding whether or not it was ever going to flower, and for a while I thought it might be yet another of those Big Green Things that take up space and cry out for water every time I turned around. After about five years in the garden it began to show what it could really do.

The flowers on my plant were scentless when I took these pictures, early in the morning, focusing right into the rising sun, on a morning so chilly we even saw touches of frost on our walk. Now, as the sun warms the flowers, they are releasing their perfume. A scent easily worth a trip of five hundred miles.

Check out Grayson & Whitter's "Train 45" recorded Oct. 1927, I believe the song 500 miles is derived from this. Many others recorded this song including Woody Guthrie, the Stanley Brothers and Arthur Smith just to name a few.

The ride out took three hours, which seemed to pass in mere moments as the excitement culminated. A hundred miles from nowhere, we slid into a cacophony of boats that crossed one another in search of prey. The scene likened to a watery city where an organized pandemonium of boats danced around one another. Finback whales breached and snorted plumes of saltwater from their spouts all the while ignoring the frenzy of watercraft above. The mission was simple as whales and men alike gathered here to catch fish. However, my seasoned guides quickly tired of the boat traffic. A new course was laid and we headed further south. We arrived at an orange high-flyer which marked deep water lobster pots. I donned a thin wetsuit and long fins and splashed overboard. Agoraphobia tried to take hold but I talked myself down and did breathing exercises to slow my heart rate. I swam to the structure teaming with life. Spearing three triggerfish and one mahi-mahi in rapid succession, I swam back to the boat and we were off to another secret spot.

We began to troll with a myriad of lines stretching aft. Long-bar spreaders, deepwater ballyhoos, and short-bar surface lures followed obediently behind. The boat slowly trolled along for hours with the lures producing no bite. Lines were reeled in and another course was set to an area where tilefish congregated. Chunks of squid were hooked and dropped down to five hundred feet. Hours went by and still no bite as the sun began to kiss the horizon. However, an excitement exuded from Ryan and John. Apparently fishing at dusk was optimal. John and Ryan were a proficient team as lures for trolling emerged once again and the ballet of rigging lines ensued.

After a full day in Saint Jean Pied de Port, we headed out to start our Camino this morning. It is a short but very steep day today. We have our choice of 15.09 miles to Roncesvalles or 4.66 to Orisson. This is the steepest and most physically challenging part of the Camino and where a lot of people get hurt, get blisters, and overdo it on the first day.

I am blessed in so many ways. First, I have a husband and kids at home that support this idea of long (really long) walks in foreign countries, I have a body strong enough to take me through every step (still no blisters), I actually like sleeping in bunk rooms and bunk beds, I have met so many wonderful, lifelong friends through pilgrimages and hiking, I get to know foreign countries at less than 3 miles an hour, and when I return home, I have wonderful friends, family and coworkers there that have been praying for me and holding things together in my absence.

Paris Creek in Idaho is a tributary to Bear Lake. Removal of an old hydropower plant will prevent dewatering of 3 miles of Paris Creek for most of the year allowing migratory cutthroat trout to access spawning grounds. Brett Prettyman/Trout Unlimited.

A recent tour offered by Trout Unlimited and the Western Native Trout Initiative, along with other partners, helped check more Bear River miles off my map. Over three days, the group visited 15 projects along the river in Utah, Wyoming and Idaho to show partners from the Resources Legacy Fund work they have funded in the past and possible work their Open Rivers Fund could help support going forward.

That means removing hundreds upon hundreds of invasive and nonnative Russian olive trees along Beaver Creek and along the Bear River. The goal is to restore native vegetation and a meandering creek to the land hoping to attract native wildlife to Boa Ogoi (the site of the massacre).

California High-Speed Rail is under construction. It is. Central Valley construction contracts total nearly $4 billion. There are 30 active construction sites spanning 119 miles across five counties: Madera, Fresno, Kings, Tulare and Kern.
