I am DeeAnn Baier, the speech-language pathologist for Fisher Public School. I work with students from preschool to high school on communication skills. This may be students who struggle with pronouncing speech sounds, have a limited vocabulary, struggle with using grammar appropriately, or have other communication difficulties. Preschool screening are provided twice a year and parents are welcome to refer their child with any concerns.

Parents are fundamental with teaching their child communications skills. Two things that I always encourage of parents to do is read and to talk to your child. Reading if full of rich vocabulary. Just reading to your child exposes them to words that typically we don't use in everyday conversation. It's also a great time to have your child point to pictures, label pictures and to answer questions. Reading is excellent way to improve language skills for our students at any age. Talk, talk, talk to your children even before they can talk. Talk about what you are doing, what they are doing and what's happening around you. Exposure to language is how we learn language. Children who have language deficits need an even more language rich environment. Reading and talking are two easy and simple ways you can impact your child's ability to communicate effectively with others.
