BIO
Mr. Aya is excited to join the band programs at Thornton Middle School and First Colony Middle School as the new Assistant Percussion Director. He most recently served as the Director of Percussion for Westbrook Intermediate and Brookside Intermediate, while also serving as the Director of the HCU Drumline and Percussion Instructor/Arranger for the Houston Christian University Marching Band.
Recently, the Westbrook Percussion Ensemble, under Mr. Aya’s direction, was selected to perform at the prestigious Music for All Festival in Indianapolis. Previously, Mr. Aya served as the Director of Percussion at Stephen F. Austin High School and its feeder campuses. In 2022, the Stephen F. Austin High School Percussion Ensemble was recognized as a Commended Winner in the national Mark of Excellence Percussion Ensemble Honors project, and in 2020, the ensemble was selected to perform at the prestigious Midwest Clinic and Convention.
Mr. Aya graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education and Human Learning. During his studies, he performed with the UT Longhorn Band, Wind Ensemble, and Percussion Ensemble while studying under George Frock, David Glover, Lisa Nicol, Tony Edwards, and Thomas Burritt.
As a performer, Mr. Aya was a member of the World Champion The Cavaliers Drum and Bugle Corps snare line from 2001–2003, earning two DCI World Championships. In 2002, he earned the bronze medal in the DCI Individual & Ensemble Competition with his snare solo, “Palindrome.” He was also a member of the 1999 Texas All-State Band and the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps snare line in 1998.
Mr. Aya has also served as the assistant percussion caption head and snare technician for the Colts Drum and Bugle Corps and previously served as the Director of Percussion Studies for Alvin High School and Alvin ISD East feeder campuses from 2004–2016. In 2017, he co-presented the first-ever TMEA clinic focused on special needs inclusion strategies in music education.
Currently, Mr. Aya is an Ensemble Block Masterclass Video Creator and Artists Relations Manager. He is sponsored by Innovative Percussion, Evans Drumheads, and Sabian Cymbals. Outside of music education, he is also an amateur disc golfer sponsored by Par 54 Disc Golf and Lone Star Disc. Mr. Aya resides in Missouri City with his wife, Laura, and their two children, Helen and Thomas.
