Marth is contacted by Gotoh, a wise old sage, who informs him that Gharnef wields the tome Imhullu, making him invincible; the only thing capable of defeating him is the magic of Starlight. Gotoh sends Marth to the Fane of Raman to find the materials needed to create Starlight; he also rescues the divine dragon, Tiki. Marth then invades Macedon and deposes the tyrannical King Michalis with the aid of Michalis' sister Princess Minerva. There, Gotoh reforges Starlight. Marth invades Khadein once more, defeats Gharnef, reclaims Falchion, and rescues Elice. He then makes his way to Dolhr, battles, and defeats Medeus, returning peace to the land. If Caeda has survived the events of the game, she and Marth declare their love for one another.
The League's next task was to free Altea. The army marched to Gra, Altea's traitorous neighbor and an ally of Dolhr, and brought down the country and its King Jiol; after the fight, Marth was disappointed to find that Altea's royal sword Falchion, said to have been stolen from his dead father by Gra at the war's beginning, was not there. His advisor Malledus theorised that Gharnef, the Dark Pontifex and resurrector of Medeus, was the one truly responsible for the blade's theft, and so the League made a fruitless detour to Khadein, the country under Gharnef's control, to recover it; there, Marth was informed by the White Sage Gotoh that they could not defeat Gharnef and recover Falchion without the Starlight spell, the only weakness of Gharnef's Imhullu spell, and tasked them with finding the Starsphere and Lightsphere, artefacts required to recreate it. The League then returned to Altea and reclaimed it from its master, Morzas of Dolhr.

The game stars Prince Marth of Altea, descendant of the legendary warrior who once defeated the nefarious dragon king Medeus. A century after his defeat, Medeus is resurrected by the evil sorcerer Gharnef, and proceeds to restore his former empire and once more declare war upon the continent of Archanea. Marth is forced to exile himself to the island kingdom of Talys during an attack on Altea, in the midst of which his father is killed and his sister captured. Three years later, Marth departs from Talys, accompanied by a handful of allies, including the Princess of Talys herself, Caeda.
