To combat the effect of corona on education a team of graduates from IIT Kharagpur and IIT Delhi have developed a free platform for students of classes 9-12, called FILO that claims to connect students with tutors over a video call in just 60 seconds to help them with studies in real time for free.

According to Filo, over 1.7 million students are now on the app and 100,000+ sessions are being handled in a day. I used the app to get a feel of how things work on Filo. Here's how my experience went.

When I downloaded the app, I did not have high hopes. For starters, the market is crowded with e-learning apps. But Filo's Uber-like approach to getting answers was quite impressive. When you feed a question to Filo - for which you can take an image or even choose from a sample of questions, it then redirects you to a countdown screen that starts at 95. Like Uber's take on available drivers, Filo shows you how many tutors have been pinged with your question. Unlike Filo's claims for finding the right tutor in less than 60 seconds, sometimes it can take a couple of attempts to find a tutor.
Once an available tutor accepts, they're instantly connected to you. In my case, when I asked a 12th Grade Chemistry question in the first go, no tutors responded. But when I switched to a Biology question, a tutor responded immediately. It seems that how quickly your query will be answered depends on your question as well as on subject matter experts who may be available to discuss it.
For my second question, I fished out a Maths question and scanned an image. Just 30 seconds later, I was connected to a tutor. Unfortunately, I don't understand Mathematics, so it's clearly too late for me. But I can see how such quick and responsive features of the app could help students who study on a tight schedule.
Traditional tutoring requires us to engage in a daily feedback mechanism. Filo's social media-inspired instant response system effectively eliminates the back-and-forth of in-person tutoring. Mind you, though! There could be other barriers on the app like language. While my first tutor on Filo appeared to be an expert matter in Biology, I had trouble processing their English.
"The algorithms discover the student's preferences and implement the feedback from the next match onward. We are constantly working on building our self-learning algorithms by creating and recording digital footprints and improving the matching making with every session which makes the tutoring experience more personalised and advantageous," he added.
Not all students are the same, and not all tutors are the same. For those who struggle to maintain their stream of concentration during school hours, the app might act as supplementary help. While Filo may help fast track your queries, it might still take a while before you find the right tutor. As always, do not depend on a single source for your tutoring needs.
Filo's co-founder Imbesat Ahmad told Indiatimes that "currently, tutors on the app are school teachers, college fresh grads, undergrads, PhDs and housewives." He admitted that "any quality checks for wrong information could be easily transmitted via a call." According to Ahmad, Filo undertakes five steps to perform a quality check on tutors - "Checking the tutors academic background, feedback collection after every session from students, quality monitoring team, removal of non-performing tutors from platform." In addition, "tutors are mapped & checked against 30+ parameters."

The curricular internship integrates and completes the student's training pathway through the performance of practical activities which, in accordance with the provisions of the Teaching Regulations of their course of study, may be carried out in facilities within the University or externally at qualified public and private organisations with which the University has entered into appropriate agreements.
The internship involves three subjects: the student, the promoter (the University of Parma) and the host (company or organisation) where the activity is carried out under the guidance of a university tutor, a University professor/instructor and a company tutor.
The curricular internship does not constitute a prerequisite for an employment relationship between the trainee and the host structure, nor can it be a substitute for company labour or professional services.
The start and conclusion of curricular internships takes place entirely online via the ESSE3 application, which can be accessed by all the actors involved, i.e. the student, the host company and the academic tutor, each using their own credentials.
