Filminera now owns the license to explore and mine for gold, silver and other minerals within the contract area covering a total of 10,807 hectares. A mine worker told of an incident when several goats were killed after drinking from a nearby stream. The goats were reportedly bought by the company to let them roam the mining sites as a publicity scheme to show that the mining sites are safe. When the company learned of the incident, it immediately dispersed the remaining live goats among its employees.

The award cited Filminera Resources “exemplary environmental initiatives in its mine sites through its public relations programs that ensure the protection, preservation and rehabilitation of the environment.” On the contrary, the people of Masbate have long been blaming the mining company for environmental destruction and massive land grabbing which threaten the province’s food security and sustainable development.

The Masbate Gold Project is a joint venture between 2 Philippine Companies and A Canadian Mining company. Working hand in hand with the government and the community to create sustainable development will turn you into a ‘responsible mining company’ which in my opinion is something that all companies should do since they are profiting from the land of the community.

Residents of Aroroy in December last year called on the authorities to investigate the reported toxic chemical spill from Filminera mining operations that spread over wide swath of farm lands. They were wary that the chemicals would eventually flow to nearby fishponds and out to the sea which could contaminate marine life. Only capable and able mining companies have the heart to marry mining and the least disturbance to be done in the environment. Doing these, we have the environment’s and our future’s welfare in mind.

Where the mining sites are located, called on authorities to conduct an investigation into the toxic chemical spill being attributed to Filminera Resources mining operations in the area. People’s organizations in Tabi Masbate’s program areas have been active in the continuing mobilizations of the growing mass movement against large-scale mining in the province.
