"Naatu Naatu" from the film RRR is up for best original song at the 95th Academy Awards. The tiger flying in the air toward Ram Charan (right), however, is not. DVV Entertainment & Variance Films  hide caption

This year's crop of Oscar nominees for best original song may not have a James Bond theme or a ubiquitous Disney banger, but it's got range: a viral dance number, a pair of ballads by major pop stars, a welcome surprise and... yes, the obligatory Diane Warren track.

Now might be a good time to note a few of the original songs that could have received Oscar nominations in 2023. Remember Turning Red's amazing boy-band pastiches? "Nobody Like U," by last year's best original song winners Billie Eilish and Finneas, didn't even make the shortlist for the category this year. Same goes for "On My Way," a Jennifer Lopez pop ballad from Marry Me that was strong enough to make viewers think, "It is plausible that this fictional chart-topper could be a huge hit in real life." Jazmine Sullivan's "Stand Up" (from Till) was shortlisted, but not nominated, while the Will Ferrell/Ryan Reynolds musical number "Good Afternoon" (from Spirited, also shortlisted-but-not-nominated) would have given the Oscars telecast a welcome bit of bonkers energy, but... here we are. Diane Warren. Again. Some more.

The Academy's members gave Warren an honorary award last fall, which makes a fair bit of sense, given that she's never been far from their minds. She received her first Oscar nomination all the way back in 1988, yet she's never won in 13 (soon to be 14) tries. That honorary award would be much more welcome if it meant that Oscar voters would stop feeling obligated to nominate her, particularly when the songs she's written are 1) generic to the point of self-parody; and 2) extremely obscure. This year's nominee is derived from a movie (Tell It Like a Woman) that not only isn't available for screening or streaming by the viewing public, but could also theoretically be entirely made up. Couldn't you imagine, say, 30 Rock's Jenna Maroney appearing in a movie called Tell It Like a Woman?

Remember that line a few sentences ago about "some pop star tossing out crumbs in the hope of getting an EGOT someday"? Meet Rihanna's "Lift Me Up," a ballad that barely merited a shrug when it came out last fall, even though it was 1) from the dizzily anticipated blockbuster Black Panther: Wakanda Forever; and 2) the singer's first piece of new music in more than six years. Revisiting the song months later, that shrug persists: Rihanna lends it a clear, emotive, luminous vocal, and it's a more-or-less effective sonic bridge between Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and its bonus scene, but the song could have been dropped onto the closing credits of just about any movie without the words needing to change.

Think about the emotional weight of the first Black Panther movie to appear following the death of Chadwick Boseman. Now take a peek at this song's lyric sheet: "Lift me up / Hold me down / Keep me close / Safe and sound." There's virtually nothing here beyond boilerplate requests for support, all the way down. Swap Rihanna's name for that of, say, Sofia Carson, and ask yourself: Would "Lift Me Up" have even made the shortlist in this category?

2. "This Is a Life," Everything Everywhere All at Once, performed by Ryan Lott, David Byrne and Mitski (Ryan Lott, David Byrne and Mitski, songwriters)

RRR is an absolute meal of a movie: Three hours of grand, epic spectacle, punctuated by brutal violence and none-too-subtle messaging that combines anti-colonialism with ultranationalism. You might love it, you might not, but let's see if we can't gather together in celebration of its greatest moment: A viral dance number called "Naatu Naatu," in which the film's impossibly telegenic stars (Ram Charan and N.T. Rama Rao Jr.) dance their hearts out while lip-syncing for their lives.

Placing "Naatu Naatu" and "Applause" in the same field of nominees is like declaring that the humble, misunderstood blobfish is visually akin to Ram Charan because they're both living organisms. Every second of this thing is electric: a song-and-dance number for which watching qualifies as aerobic exercise, in part because dancing along is essentially involuntary.

It's honestly a shame that the credits at the top of this ranking can only note performers and songwriters, because a healthy share of the credit also belongs to RRR's leads. Their commitment to the bit, and to Prem Rakshith's impeccably synchronized choreography, makes "Naatu Naatu" one of the season's biggest Oscar slam dunks. It should win, it almost certainly will win, and the fact that it's being performed on the telecast means we all win.

In an interview with Variety in January, director SS Rajamouli said he wanted to explore the movie's anti-colonial themes through an action sequence that saw the film's two main Indian actors out-dance the British.

The Elvis 2022 movie soundtrack has several songs in the movie. While not every song was by Elvis Presley himself, many of them were even contemporary songs and performances by modern artists. While Austin Butler picked up an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, hoping to replicate his success after winning the Golden Globes award for the same honor, the Oscars chose to snub the movie when it came to honoring the year's music in movies. Elvis picked up seven Oscar nominations, including one for Best Picture.

Lead singer Thom Yorke, producer Nigel Godrich, and lead guitarist/keyboardist Jonny Greenwood discussed the track in a 2017 Rolling Stone article as part of an expansive oral history of OK Computer, providing background into its its composition and its ties to an actual film:

Drawing inspiration from the lives of freedom fighters Komaram Bheem and Alluri Sitarama Raju, RRR narrates a fictional tale set in the 1920s. The film boasts an ensemble cast, starring the likes of Jr NTR, Ram Charan, Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Olivia Morris, Samuthirakani, Alison Doody, and Ray Stevenson.

Thampi, who was hardly 20 years of age, began initial work on the film in 1954. D.M. Pottekkad was chosen as scriptwriter and director. Vimalkumar was enlisted as music director and along with Vayalar Thampi roped in Thirunelloor Karunakran to write the lyrics. For some reason Thirunalloor was dropped and the entire responsibility of writing songs was thrust on Vayalar.

For the recording of songs a team consisting of singers, the music director, producer and director travelled to Madras. Everything was going as planned when Thampi contracted typhoid. His close friends forced him to return. Thampi was advised bed rest and medication.

Thampi had already advertised this project in some periodicals and dailies before leaving for Madras. All this cost Thampi a loss of around Rs. 20,000. Thampi later returned to Malayalam cinema and directed a couple of films such as Nisagandhi (1970) and Masappadi Mathupilla (1973).

The 1946 live-action film follows the story of a 7-year-old boy named Johnny, who visits his grandmother's plantation in Georgia after the abolition of slavery. Bobby befriends an ex-slave living on the plantation named Uncle Remus, played by James Baskett, who spins moralistic tales about the adventures of Br'er Rabbit, Br'er Fox, and Br'er Bear.

"Song of the South" garnered some accolades after its premiere, winning an Oscar for the song "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and an honorary award for Baskett's performance. (Baskett was not allowed to attend the film's premiere in Atlanta, which was then a segregated city.)

Disney World's Splash Mountain ride, which focuses solely on the adventures of Br'er Rabbit, was an "attempt to sanitize Disney history" by omitting any mentions of the controversial aspects of the film, like Uncle Remus and little Johnny, according to Jason Sperb, a film professor at Oklahoma State University and author of "Disney's Most Notorious Film: Race, Convergence, and the Hidden Histories of Song of the South."

Even during the film's production in the 1940s, Disney knew it was navigating dangerous terrain and took steps to mitigate racist representations of plantation life. "Dumbo," which was released just a few years earlier in 1941, had been criticized for its depiction of wisecracking black crows, one of whom was named Jim Crow.

The largely unknown roots of popular and lasting Disney songs like "Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah" and rides like Splash Mountain illustrate how "Song of the South" became one of "Hollywood's most resiliently offensive racist texts," according to Sperb.

Although Disney's reimagining of Splash Mountain is a step toward addressing its complicated history with racism, some argue that "Song of the South" should not be totally forgotten. In 2017, Whoopi Goldberg told Disney to stop hiding its history, saying she wanted to make the film available to the public.

The song was first sung by Shirazi Choir of the Kharazemi Girls High School in the 1950s and over the years it has become a popular wedding song. It is said to be adapted from a poem of the same name, written by famous Iranian poet Bijan Smandar.

Animal, directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, also stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. The film is also backed by talents like Anil Kapoor. Tripti Dimri, and Rashmika Mandanna. The movie has been doing well in theatres. It has already done business of over Rs 380 crore in India and over Rs 600 crore globally.

Michael Fassbender, who plays Cook in the film, and Terrence Malick, director and writer, met with Richard Linklater, director, producer and writer, at South By Southwest in Austin to discuss the production of the movie and what it was like behind the scenes.
