Examinations and Grading Policy: There will be three oral midterms, an oral final exam, Friday take-home quizzes and online homework. Quizzes and homework make up 10% of the total grade. The three midterms are for 20%, 30%, and 40% of the grade, respectively. The final exam will be used ONLY to replace one of the midterm grades, if it helps the total score. Make sure to tell me in advance of any absences. Unless otherwise noted, take-home quizzes are due by the end of the day on Friday. Check the course calendar for review and quiz dates.
Homework: online homework will be done using WebWork as described in the official webpage. Make sure to monitor the due dates on WebWork.
Online classroom netiquette:
Stay on topic – do not post irrelevant links, comments, thoughts, or pictures. Do not type in ALL CAPS! If you do, it will look like you’re screaming.
Respect the opinions of your classmates. If you feel the need to disagree, do so respectfully and acknowledge the valid points in your classmate’s argument. Acknowledge that others are entitled to have their own perspective on the issue.
Rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t do or say something in real life, don’t do it online either.
Disability information: If you have a disability for which you are or may be requesting an accommodation, please contact both me and the Services for Students with Disabilities office (119 University Union, 607-777-2686) as early in the term as possible.
Below is a summary of how grades will be calculated.
* The final exam will be used ONLY to replace one of the midterm grades, if it helps the total score. For example, a score of 90% on the final can be converted to be 18% grade for Midterm 1 or 27% for Midterm 2 or 36% for Midterm 3.
Tentative grade cut-offs: A: 90-100, B: 73-89, C: 55-72, D: 38-54 and proportional cutoffs for A-, B+, B-, C+ and C-.
Academic Honesty: Students are asked to practice extra care and attention in regard to academic honesty, with the understanding that all cases of plagiarism, cheating, multiple submission, and unauthorized collaboration are subject to penalty. Students must properly cite and attribute all sources used for papers and assignments. Students may not collaborate on exams or assignments, directly or through virtual consultation, unless the instructor gives specific permission to do so. Posting an exam, assignment, or answers to them on an online forum (before, during, or after the due date), in addition to consulting posted materials, constitutes a violation of the university’s Honesty policy. Likewise, unauthorized use of live assistance websites, including seeking “expert” help for specific questions during an exam, can be construed as a violation of the honesty policy. All students should be familiar with the University’s Student Academic Honesty Code.
As the semester progresses, we may have to make reasonable adjustments when necessary.
