Tim Powers

Background: Tim is a 24 year old white gay man. He grew up in East Millinocket, a small town in  Maine. He went to Opal Myrick Elementary School and Schenck High School, where he was into music and theater. He went to NYU to pursue the arts and writing. Tim was diagnosed with AIDS in 1987, and joined ACT UP. He is a founding member of ACT UP's PISD Caucus (People with Immune System Disorders).

Role in ACT UP: Tim is on the Actions Committee and is coordinating Support for Target City Hall.

Groups/friends at the meeting: The principals planning Target City Hall

Specific tasks at the March 13, 1989 meeting: Tim is on the agenda as part of the Target City Hall update to distribute Support sheets (which he should pick up from the Administrator before the meeting) to each affinity group and ask them to return the completed Support sheets to him. The Support Sheets are how the Actions Committee will know what kind of logistical support each affinity groups need for their actions, where/when that will be needed, etc.

-Tim will stress to the Floor that every affinity group should have at least one and probably more than one Support person.

- Support people do not take part in civil disobedience, but keep track of the people who are taking part in civil disobedience.

- Everyone who will be taking part in an action, especially anyone who is considering getting arrested, should check in with their affinity group’s Support person. That way the Support person can keep track of you and make sure you receive legal support and don’t get lost in the system.

- Tim will also ask for volunteers to be runners at Target City Hall (basically go-betweens who can communicate with the Target City Hall organizers and the affinity groups) and will announce a Support Teach-In on Friday, March 17 at the Center from 6pm to 8pm to train people for providing support at actions, specifically Target City Hall.

Tim is also on the agenda later in the meeting to announce a PISD Caucus Meeting (People with Immune System Disorders) on Wednesday at 8pm at the Center.
