Peter Staley

Background: Peter is a 28 year old white gay man who grew up from the age of eight in Berwyn, Pennsylvania. His Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Staley) gives a summary of his early life (though note that most of the Activism section discusses things he did post-3/13/1989).

Role in ACT UP: Peter is one of the more prominent people in ACT UP. His flair for the theatrical at ACT UP actions (for example, climbing up onto the awning at the FDA and hanging ACT UP banners) has made him something of a poster boy for ACT UP. Peter is the chair of the Fundraising Committee.

Groups/friends at the meeting: Frank Smithson, Blane Mosley, Lee Arsenault, Fundraising Committee, Powertools

Specific tasks at the March 13, 1989 meeting: Peter is on the agenda to give the Fundraising Committee report:

- A benefit performance of “Soul Survivor” (a play about AIDS) netted $300

- There will be a party in honor of Steve Cohen (the prominent gay nightlife promoter) at the Palladium on April 9. Peter will ask the Floor to vote to endorse a proposal that ACT UP be one of the four beneficiaries of the party.

- Peter will propose ACT UP’s 2nd Annual Talent Show for March 30 at Trax, which will be a party not a fundraiser.
