I International Forum of Culture, Literature and Applied Linguistics: practices and transgressions

Federal University of Paraná (UFPR)

Núcleo de Assessoria Pedagógica (NAP-UFPR)

November 08th and 09th, 2018

This conference, organized by the Research Group “Identity and Reading”, from UFPR, was conceived in honour of Professor Lynn Mario Trindade Menezes de Souza (USP), whose name has become a reference in the areas of Applied Linguistics, Cultural Studies and Literature, both in Brazil and internationally.

The first FICLLA aims to involve the public in the research topics presented to provide everyone with the opportunity to contribute to the academic discussion of the subjects covered, as well as to bring together informal and formal research perspectives, constructing knowledge in a more democratic way. Hence, the presentation modalities proposed differ from the formats usually seen in conferences and academic events.

Coordinated and conducted by (former) advisees of Professor de Souza, FICLLA will be organized around two types of participation: ROUND TABLES/CONVERSATION CIRCLES among all the attendees in order to allow more active participation of all; and POSTER PRESENTATIONS, to construct more dynamic and dialogical presentation spaces among the different participants.

Videos

We ask all of you, whether attending the event or not, to send us a short video of one and a half minutes (maximum) talking about the nature of your academic and/or personal contact with Professor Lynn Mario.

This video may have a more personal and/or more professional nature (as each author may wish), as this event has been planned to engage us not only intellectually but also emotionally, blurring the line that so clearly seems to separate these two domains of our lives.

Your video should be recorded online at the link below, and will be made available to the general public on the event website. The videos will also be displayed in various rooms at the conference venue during the breaks, as illustrations of the various forms of academic relationships and connections that Professor Lynn Mario has developed. By uploading the video, participants automatically consent to the publication and viewing forms described here. The videos will be deleted from the web as soon as the event is over.

PASSWORD: FICLLA2018

FLIP CODE: 31xpeu (use this code to record on Flipgrid iOS and Android apps)

We expect to have received your video by October 1st, 2018.

Honoured Guest

Lynnmarian Thaumatrope

Always deeply involved in what he was studying (whether culture, literature or linguistics), Lynn Mario has never deviated from the conflicts inherent to language behavior. This is how, for decades, he has been helping those who cross his path to build themselves into people who are more sensitive to the contemporary world. Studies on the political situation of Concani (in India); education for global citizenship (in England); multimodal writing and its relationship with Portuguese, the education of indigenous peoples, teaching English with regard to ethics and methods, the concept of literacy, and literature in the public school system (all of these in Brazil) offer us a perspective of how a scholar can wear many hats.

In fact, he is a researcher who tills the soil: one who stirs, pulls, turns, exposes many soils... narrowing the space between languages, pedagogy, philosophy and social sciences. He is a "digger", who unearths the sediments that cover the roots of our well-compacted beliefs; at the same time, it is he himself who stresses the thaumatrope and, between one thing and another, fuses, in motion, opposite realities. He guides people to know themselves better and also brings together those who would dive with him, following the trajectory of a young globetrotter who crossed England, Mozambique, Canada, Finland, India, Australia and Brazil, his country "without papers".

With such wandering spirit, Lynn does not accept - in fact, he denies, rejects, protests - stillness, a static existence. His multifaceted self impacts the research of each (former) advisee and beyond, offering a simple nudge at each study group meeting, until an unexpected understanding emerges from the readings. Lynn is someone who does his homework: he has been walking softly, in stride with his peers and advisees. Yet, the university is not the only place where he inhabits. He shares his knowledge - also and especially - outside of the academy. This is where he shines brightest, giving a piece of himself and becoming more whole.

(Written by Guilherme Adami, advisee)

MODALITIES FOR PARTICIPATION

  1. Round Tables/ Conversation Circles

Round tables/ Conversation circles are spaces for different and diverse interests whose intent is to allow all participants to perform more active roles. As their goal is to involve the public in discussions on the developments of the proposed themes, the presentations should bring inquiries to be discussed by all people present.

▪ There will be up to five simultaneous round tables/conversation circles (see the program) and the participants will be able to choose among them, once they have registered for the event. Each round table/conversation circle will last one hour and a half, and will be divided into two parts:

Part 1: debate among invited members of the round table/conversation circle, to be attended by the public (45 minutes)

Part 2: debate among the members of the round table/conversation circle and all the participants in order to engage the delegates in a problematizing dialogue (45 minutes).

▪ Each round table/conversation circle will have a coordinator who will be responsible for organizing the debate both beforehand and during the table/circle itself. When registering a proposal for the round table/conversation circle, the coordinator must submit the names of the members of the table/circle and the theme to be debated.

▪ Each round table/conversation circle will have, besides the coordinator, two or three members who must present controversial and polemical questions or developments of their research in diverse social practices to the public. Thus, the questions can be debated by all people present.

▪ Additionally, we would like to point out that the round tables/conversation circles do not serve the purpose of advertising research, but of fostering debates on the problematic aspects of the themes to be discussed in each round table/conversation circle.

The calls for proposals for the Round table/Conversation circles are not open to the general public, since they will be coordinated by (former) advisees and participants of national and international research groups directly linked to Dr. de Souza. Therefore, the organizing committee intends to ensure that the Round tables/Conversation circles deal with subjects directly related to the work of the honoured professor.

Themes:

  • LANGUAGE, DIFFERENCE AND RESISTANCE OF/THROUGH/WITHIN CULTURAL, INTERLINGUAL AND LITERARY TRANSLATION
  • LITERACY AND COMMUNITIES: TRANSFORMATION OR MEANING REPRODUCTION ON WHATSAPP?
  • CONFLUENCES (AND DIVERGENCES) BETWEEN LINGUISTIC/LITERARY EDUCATION AND GENDER, RACE AND SEXUALITY STUDIES
  • ITINERANT DIALOGUES: HISTORY AND MEMORY - PROBLEMATIZING LIFE EXPERIENCES IN TEACHER EDUCATION
  • FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATION IN BRAZIL TODAY
  • TEACHER EDUCATION, MULTILITERACIES AND INCLUSION OF STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES
  • PIBID AND PEDAGOGICAL RESIDENCY: ROLLING THE ROULETTE WHEEL OF LANGUAGE TEACHER EDUCATION
  • NEW VISUAL PARADIGMS: FROM ILLUSTRATION TO MEANING-MAKING
  • REARTICULATION OF LANGUAGE IMPERIALISM UPON INDIGENOUS LANGUAGE DIVERSITY

  • LANGUAGE, EPISTEMIC RACISM AND UNIVERSALITY IN THE ABSENCE OF BLACK GRADUATE STUDENTS

2. Poster presentation:

Participants can present posters on themes related to the Round tables/Conversation circles. We emphasize that this is not a traditional poster presentation, commonly held in academic events to disseminate research and projects: the posters must be thematically related to the Round tables/Conversation circles. Therefore, the themes of the Tables/Circles should be approached from different perspectives in a way to problematize significant issues and to allow the continuation of the conversations before and after the Tables/Circles.

The proposal of posters can be submitted after the release of the themes of the Round tables/ Conversation Circles by the end of April. More details about the format of the posters will be provided soon.

3. Videos

We encourage all people, whether attending the event or not, to send us a short video of one and a half minutes (maximum) talking about the nature of your academic and/or personal contact with Professor Lynn Mario. More details on VIDEOS.
