Future Horizons in Human–AI Interaction (FH-HAI):
Joint Perspectives from
HCI and AI
@ AVI 2026, 8th-12th June 2026, Venice, Italy
@ AVI 2026, 8th-12th June 2026, Venice, Italy
Recent advances in AI, from generative models to socially interactive agents, present new opportunities and challenges for user interaction, creating a pressing need for joint HCI and AI perspectives on designing human-centered AI systems. This workshop addresses the gap between AI development and human-centered design by bringing together researchers and practitioners from both communities to explore future horizons in human–AI interaction. The topic is timely and relevant to AVI 2026’s theme of “Interactive Creativity: Agencies, Interfaces, and Ethics,” as the proliferation of AI technologies raises fundamental questions about user agency, transparent interfaces, and ethical design. The goal of the proposed interactive workshop’s goal is to formulate shared guidelines, research directions, and collaborative initiatives that will shape the next generation of interactive AI systems in a human-centered, socially responsible manner.
Submission date for contributions*: March 29th, 2026
Notification date for contributions*: April 10th, 2026
*The contributions for this workshop will be a title and abstract for a potential "position paper" about the topic of the conference.
A form will be opened in mid-February to submit these contributions
This workshop is intended for a broad audience of researchers, practitioners, and students interested in the intersection of human-computer interaction and artificial intelligence. We specifically welcome:
- HCI researchers and UX professionals who are incorporating AI technologies into interactive systems and want to ensure these systems are usable, understandable, and socially acceptable.
- AI researchers and developers who seek to better understand human factors, usability, and design principles in order to make their AI models more human-centered and effective in real-world use.
- Designers, cognitive scientists, and domain experts (e.g., in education, healthcare, assistive technology) who work on AI-powered applications and wish to discuss best practices for user engagement, trust, and ethics.
- Graduate students and early-career researchers in HCI or AI looking for inspiration and collaboration opportunities at the convergence of these fields.
The workshop will cover a range of topics at the intersection of HCI and AI, including (but not limited to):
Human-Centered AI and User Experience: Design principles and evaluation methods for AI systems that prioritize user needs, trust, and satisfaction.
Socially Intelligent Agents and Robots: Human–AI interaction with conversational agents, virtual assistants, and social robots in various domains (health, education, work, entertainment)
Explainability and Transparency: Improving AI explainability, user understanding of AI decisions, and strategies for maintaining user control and trust in AI systems
Adaptive and Personalized Interfaces: AI-driven personalization and user modeling for interfaces that adapt to individual differences (e.g. preferences, cognitive/emotional state)
Participatory Design for AI/HCI: Involving end-users and stakeholders in the design of AI systems (co-design approaches) to ensure technology is aligned with real-world social and ethical contexts
Ethical and Inclusive AI Interaction: Identifying and addressing issues of fairness, accessibility, transparency and responsible design in AI-powered interfaces, especially for vulnerable populations (e.g., in rehabilitation, older care, education, etc.)
These topics closely align with core AVI themes such as intelligent interfaces, human-robot interaction, and values in design, making the workshop a fitting addition to the conference.
