USS Alliance (CA-84) was the final all-gun cruiser of the United Federation Navy. Originally designed and built as FWS Alliance, a heavy cruiser for the Federal Wisconsinite Navy, her contract was cancelled during production and after much deliberation, the Federation Navy took up the vessel. Under the ownership of the United Federation, she saw a great deal of service during peacetime before being seized by the Circles Revolution against the Federation. After the bombardment of the revolt that kickstarted Prairie War III, she was retaken by her crew and returned to the Federation, soon to become the centralized authority of the Madden Imperial Reich, and she was put into fascist service. As ISS Alliance she was a frequent participant in battles throughout the war, notably in the battles of Cassel Gulf and Kegonsa; during the latter, she would defect to the United Federation Government-in-Exile and was one of the many vessels which sailed under the proper Federation flag until the conclusion of the war.
Its hull was based upon, and considered a general improvement over, the Exeter-class of the Federation Navy, but the Alliance mounted nine 8-inch guns in 3 triple turrets; two superfiring forward and one aft. Unlike most cruisers of the Federation Navy, she also mounted a substantial secondary armament, a relic of her Wisconsinite naval heritage. The Wisconsinite Navy needed more powerful single ships compared to the large battle lines that the Federation and other navies planned to develop. Alliance carried five 5-inch guns that could be used against other cruisers, destroyers, and as anti-aircraft weapons. She may have been intended to carry torpedo tubes at one point, but this remains unclear.
