GENERAL 4-H NEWS

4-H ADULT COLLABORATIVE NEEDS LEADERSHIP

4-H ADULTS SEEKING LEADERSHIP!

The Boulder County 4-H Adult Collaborative (formerly called Leaders Advisory Council) is looking for more participation and leadership from parents and adults in the 4-H program. We are currently looking for a president to run the meetings and help guide the program. The adult group is a volunteer networking session that helps all adults and volunteers connect at the county level. Volunteers also develop new leadership skills, meet new friends, and make a difference in the lives of youth.

MISSION: The mission of the 4-H Adult Collaborative is to foster

communication and connections between parents, leaders, and agents by

sharing information about upcoming events and activities, advising programs

and processes and/or recommending changes, providing resources and

education, and by providing a forum to network and share ideas for improving

Boulder County 4-H.

PRESIDENT ROLE

The President shall preside at all regular meetings and special meetings of the Council, shall appoint committees, shall call all regular and special meetings, shall preserve order, shall be the liaison between County Leaders Council and the Northern Region Leaders representatives, and shall perform other duties that are in the best interest of the Council. The President shall create and distribute the agenda, meeting notice, and minutes of the prior meeting.

TIME COMMITMENT:

The meetings are held at 6:30 PM on the first Wednesday of each month in Longmont at the Boulder County Fairgrounds Clover Club room. Planning agenda, running the meeting, and follow-up is on average 4 hours a month.

RECORD BOOKS ARE AVAILABLE

Record Books are Available!

The 2023-24 4-H record books (e-Records) are available to download! It is never too early to start recording your 4-H Information. They are on the Boulder County 4-H Web Page: https://boulder.extension.colostate.edu/4h/4-h-projects/ As well as the state 4-H pages along with lots of supporting info like tip sheets, fair info, animal ID, etc.

Livestock - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/animals/

General projects - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/fcs/

Also - http://co4h.colostate.edu/program-areas/creative-arts/

Download your record book(s) and save them to your computer.  Many come in both Excel and PDF versions.  PDF is easier, especially if you just have one project.  But Excel supports copy and paste and is better for kids doing multiple projects.  If it is saved to your computer, you can just update it throughout the year as you go.  You can also always print them out and do them by hand - your choice.

Download one for each project, and 1 for every 4 livestock projects.  (For example, cake decorating has its book, shooting sports has its book, etc.  Livestock allows for 4 livestock projects to be combined in one book, so dairy goats, utility goats, poultry, rabbits, etc, can all be together.)  Dog and horse have their books.

Happy Record Keeping!

CLUB NEWS

4X4 DOG CLUB

4x4 dog club

BY MANDY ROTH

The 4x4 dog club wishes you a wonderful February. We are nearing our training season, but what exactly do we learn in the club? New members start off with a no dogs introduction training where they learn about what they will need for the project and how to keep themselves and their dogs safe during training. Then the real fun begins. Members begin bringing their dogs in for weekly beginner obedience classes, as the year goes on they begin to learn about showmanship and rally (two other dog sports we compete in) and begin training their dogs in these events as well. More advanced members continue to work on harder exercises for all three of these events. While preparing members and their dogs for fair, these classes also teach important dog manners and safety along with lots of fun tricks and games.

Last year members who were competing off leash with their dogs were given the chance to join our agility program. We had weekly classes with local instructors teaching the groundwork for competing in agility. Members learned how to send their dogs over jumps and through tunnels, they also learned about different crosses (a way to change the side of the dog you are on while running a course) and how to execute them. The program was a huge success, we had lots of kids compete at our Boulder County Fair agility contest, and many members had the opportunity to compete at the Stare Agility Trials. The club hopes we will be able to expand the program even more this year and will be adding a pre-foundation class for dogs who are not ready to compete off leash. Thank you to everyone who watched or competed, it meant a lot to the club.

No matter how old or young, small or big, fast or slow, your dog is, they can still learn. Training your dog is a great way to build your bond and have fun together. Here are a few of my favorite beginner tricks that you and your dog will love. I have added links from AKC’s website (which is an amazing dog training resource) to help you start out.

Roll over- https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/how-to-teach-a-dog-to-roll-over/

Shake- https://www.akc.org/expert-advice/training/training-shelter-dogs/

I hope this helps you start your training journey. Have a great day and best of wishes from the 4x4 dog club.

HORSE LEADERS COUNCIL

Ranch Horse Mentor Match-Up at the National Western Stock Show

By, Mea French

Easy Riders Volunteer

Horse Leader’s Council member

A big “congratulations” to current BoCo 4-H horse member AnnaThomas and alumnae Delaney Helgans (both a part of Easy Rider’s 4-H club) for doing so

well in their Ranch Horse Mentor Match-Up competition at the National Western Stock Show in early January.

Delaney (with her mentor, Jesse Jolly from Agate, Colorado ) took 4th place. Anna (with her mentor, Steve Schwartzenberger from Longmont ) was a reserve

champion earning $1,000 in scholarship money

It was fun watching and rooting for them. They both had a good cheering section from their Boulder County 4-H friends.

These riders get to work with selected talented industry horse professionals in the disciplines of ranch riding, ranch trail, reining, and cow work… then compete against each other in this match-up between 9 other riders. It was an exciting event all around.

10 riders with their horses and their mentors waiting for competition results

Delaney Helgans (mint green team) on her horse, Sis, and her mentor, Jesse Jolly from Agate, Colorado

Delaney and Sis working on their Western Ranch Riding skills

Smiles are shared between Anna and her mentor, Steve Schwartzenberger from Longmont as they enjoy their swag from their Reserve Championship status.

Anna and Persia working their cow.

Fun hanging with friends and family at the National Western Stock Show Youth Ranch Horse Mentor Match Up who came from Boulder County to support all the riders…but especially “their own,” Delaney and Anna.

Welcome to the 2024 4-H Dog Training Year!

The Training Schedule for 2024 is now available and included in this newsletter! The schedule is also posted on the County 4-H Dog Project web page and classes are listed on the 4-H Team Up Calendar

Most of our classes will be on Wednesdays, but there are a few times we will meet on other days due to building availability.  Training locations will also bounce around a bit between the Exhibit Building, Barn A and the Indoor Arena, so be sure to check the location for each class on the schedule. Most classes will start the year training in the Exhibit Building and then move over to Barn A.  We also have 7 nights reserved for Agility and optional Obedience/Rally training on the dirt floor in the Indoor Arena. New this year, we are offering an on-leash Agility class for members in their second or higher year of dog training.  This will be a no-score class at our County Fair Agility contest, and will give more members a chance to have fun and bond with their pups through Agility training!

Dog Vaccination Requirements

For safety reasons ALL dogs participating in the 4-H Dog Project MUST be current on their vaccinations for Rabies, Parvo and Distemper. Bordatella is an optional vaccine, but is strongly encouraged. Now is a good time to confirm your pup’s vaccination status!   In order to participate in group dog training, members are required to provide proof of current vaccination prior to attending class. You can email copies of your pup’s shot record to ajanicki@comcast.net, or bring a copy with you to Orientation or to the first training class.  Dogs will not be allowed to participate in any 4-H Dog Training, Fun Matches, Workshops, County Fair or the Colorado State Dog Contest without the required proof of current vaccination.

Introduction to the Boulder County 4-H Dog Project

If this is your first year in the 4-H Dog Project, please plan to attend the Introductory Dog Project Workshop on Wednesday, February 21st from 6:30-8:00 pm in Barn A. (NO DOGS this time) We will explain the project requirements, training class placement and schedules, and will discuss recommended training equipment.  4-H members, volunteers and trainers will be there to answer any questions you have about your dog or the project.  Members will also have an opportunity to walk through the Beginner Obedience course with an experienced dog. Please remember to bring a chair and notebook with you!

Canine Respiratory Disease

CSU researchers are investigating a canine respiratory disease that has spiked in Colorado and other states this past year. Symptoms include coughing (similar to Bordatella/Kennel Cough), and possibly eye or nose discharge and sneezing.  Some of these infections have led to pneumonia. To help keep our pups safe and healthy during our 4-H training year, we require that ALL project dogs be fully vaccinated for Rabies, Parvo and Distemper.  Additionally, dog-to-dog interaction is strongly discouraged in our 4-H training classes. Boulder County 4-H will continue to monitor the recommendations from CSU and will notify project members if anything changes. In the meantime, you can also help keep our pups safe and healthy by:

·         Making sure your dog is fully vaccinated and consider getting the Bordatella and Canine Influenza vaccines (check with your vet for additional vaccination recommendations)

·         Avoiding dog parks and other social events where your dog could have contact with dogs of unknown vaccination or health status. (All dogs at 4-H events are required to be fully vaccinated)

·         Keeping an eye on your pup’s health status. If you notice progressive coughing that may be accompanied by signs of ocular or nasal discharges and sneezing, please contact your vet immediately and notify the 4-H Dog Superintendent so we can take steps to keep other dogs safe.

Additional information about this canine disease can be found on the CSU Vet School web page at https://cvmbs.source.colostate.edu/respiratory-illness-canine/

DAIRY CATTLE

DAIRY STEER PROGRAM

Boulder County 4-H 2-year Dairy Steer Program (DSP)

The 4-H Dairy Cattle program is offering new classes.  It promotes another side of the Dairy project. Learn how this project enters into our food chain other than with milk products. The dairy sector contributed 5.6 billion pounds (21 percent) of beef to the U.S. commercial beef supply. Dairy steers are well known for their ability to produce the highest quality grades of beef (Prime and High Choice cuts).

This will be a 2-year project, you will start with a bull calf, castrate, and feed him.

Dairy Cattle Project: Did you know?

Did you know that you can also do the Dairy Cattle Project and learn all the aspects of the dairy industry without you, yourself ever having to milk her?

You can start with a calf and exhibit the same heifer for 2 years  (2 fairs) by following the DHRP (Dairy Heifer Replacement Program) rules & guidelines. You will also have an opportunity to sell your heifer through the Livestock Sale once she’s bred (check the rules), knowing that she will carry on in life as a producing cow. You could even apply to the Ag Youth Loan Program where you can purchase a calf for the 2-yr program or you can purchase a bred yearling that you can sell at the 2024 fair. You must have possession & ownership by the last Thursday in April (animal ID deadline) along with turning in the DHRP nomination form to the 4-H office.

If the idea of selling a dairy heifer interests you, please check out the DHRP rules and guidelines especially prior to purchasing a new heifer for this program. For more information about these programs or on the Dairy Cattle Project itself, even help in finding a dairy heifer, or a bull calf. Call Tina (303) 828-3789 or email: runrunnerrun@aol.com
