Born in Rajasthan, India in a nomadic Banjara household in 1947, her family relocated to Karachi after the Partition of India. Discovered by a local producer at the age of twelve while singing at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan, Sindh, Reshma went on to record various folk songs for such labels as the Pakistan Radio.[1] Her first project with the company "Laal Meri" was an instant hit and she was catapulted to fame with several television appearances in the 1960s.[2]

Reshma went on to record songs for both the Pakistani and Indian film industry. Some of her most memorable songs include "Laal Meri", "Hai O Rabba Nahion Lagda Dil Mera", "Ankhiyan Nu Rehen De" and "Lambi Judai" among others.[3] She died on 3 November 2013 in Lahore, Pakistan, after suffering from throat cancer for several years.[1]

Reshma was spotted, at the age of 12, singing at the Shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar by then Pakistani television and radio producer, Saleem Gilani. Gilani arranged for her to make a recording of "Laal Meri Pat Rakhio" on Radio Pakistan in 1968.[2][5] She became an instant hit and since that day, Reshma has been one of the most popular folk singers of Pakistan, and garnered international renown.[7] Reshma had been appearing on television since 1968, recording songs for both the Pakistani and Indian film industry, and performing in live concerts at home and abroad.[8]

Some of her famous songs are "Dama Dam Mast Kalandar", "Hai O' Rabba nahion lagda dil mera",[1] "Sun charkhe di mithi mithi khook mahiya meinu yaad aunda", "Wey main chori chori teray naal laayyan akhhian" ( song lyrics by renowned Punjabi poet Manzoor Hussain Jhalla ), "Kithay Nain Na Jori", "Lambi Judai" and "Ankhiyan nu rehen de ankhyan de kol kol".[1]

The above song was used by Raj Kapoor in his film Bobby, "Ankhyon ko rehne de ankhyon ke aas pass", sung by Lata Mangeshkar. Her fame had crossed the border, thanks to pirated tapes. She was able to perform live in India much later, during the 1980s when India and Pakistan allowed exchange of artists. Subhash Ghai used her voice in the film Hero, which featured one of her most famous songs, "Lambi Judai".[9]

For Reshma it's been a ''lambi judaai'' (long separation) from Amritsar and her fans welcomed her with open arms today. It has been over two decades since she sang the song ''lambi judaai'' for Subhash Ghai's film 'Hero'. ''I really wanted to pay obeisance at Harmander Sahib'', she said.

She said, 'Arrey bhai main khule aasmaan ke neeche gaati hoon. Mujhe toh radio par gaane mein ghabraahat hoti hai.' She reluctantly agreed. And that's how the song 'Lambi Judaai' in Hero was born. How were we to know at that time that it would acquire such an immortal life? Anand Bakshi Saab was given the job of writing the lyrics and Laxmikant-Pyarelal composed the song. The recording was at Mehboob Studios. Instead of the 100-150 member orchestra that Laxmikant generally favoured, he had just 12 musicians in the studio. When I asked the reason for this Laxmikant said the less the embellishment, the more her powerful voice quality would show up in the song. When we recorded the song we just made the musicians follow Reshmaji's voice, rather than the other way around. We instructed the musicians to let her sing the way she wanted and to just play along with her voice. We didn't know the result would be so staggering, so ever-lasting. 'Lambi Judaai' became the soul of Hero. Reshmaji didn't sing for money or fame. She sang because there were songs to sing. The spontaneity and innocence were part of her nature. She never discussed money. True artistes never do. She sang with a child's enthusiasm and innocence. Her voice was driven by the three 'Ps': Power, Passion, and Purity. She never cared to save up for illness and old age. That's why she had no money when she fell ill. We artistes don't care about anything except doing what our heart tells. Today the rights of 'Lambi Judaai' are not with me. It is with Saregama. When such classic songs were composed, we just signed pieces of paper with the music company.
