We provide FREE legal help to eligible farmworkers. We help people with civil legal issues – but cannot help with criminal charges.
Our help ranges from legal advice and brief assistance to negotiations and full legal representation.
Eligibility is based on household income and assets.
Pine Tree has a special group of advocates for the legal needs of agricultural workers. The Farmworker Unit helps people who:
Harvest crops like apples, broccoli, and blueberries
Work in forestry
Work in packing houses
Work in the seafood industry
Work in wreath making
We also provide legal services to farmworkers in other New England states, and we publish information for farmworkers each year.
More information can be found on our website.
We publish:
A Harvest Calendar full of information about the rights of farmworkers
Please contact us for more information or to get a free copy of these resources!
We also create videos with information on many farmworker topics
We also can help with:
Landlord/tenant issues: like if you are being evicted or if you have unsafe housing conditions
Federal tax issues: like if the IRS is saying that you owe money.
Mainecare issues: like if you are told you are not eligible for this type of health coverage or if you have Mainecare and they won’t pay for a medical service you need.
FreeCare denials: if a hospital is telling you must pay in full for treatment but you think you should qualify for reduced or no cost services.
Education issues for children: like if a school won’t let you enroll your child or they are not providing the services your child needs. Visit our KidsLegal website to learn more!
Public benefits issues: like if you are denied TANF or food stamp benefits or if DHHS says you have an overpayment.
Housing Discrimination: like if you are being treated differently in your housing because of your race or if you need an accommodation because of a disability.
Debt issues: like if you are being sued by a credit card company or have a student loan issue.
Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault: like if you have filed a Protection from Abuse order.
