Frequently Asked Questions (F.A.Q)
How do I become a member of the Farmington United Percussion Ensemble (FUPE)?
FUPE holds auditions every Fall preceding the coming indoor percussion season. Auditions are generally held in October and November and cost a minimal audition fee. Additional information can be found on the Join page.
What is the time commitment to be a member of FUPE?
Each ensemble rehearses two to three times a week during the season. For the Independent A Ensemble we plan to rehearse Fridays from 6 to 9 PM and Saturdays from 9 AM to 9 PM. All contests except the World Championships are held on weekends.
Can I be a part of other activities while being a member of FUPE?
Yes, we have an unblemished record of working with members who are involved in musicals, band programs, sports, work and other conflicts. Communication is required in advance of all conflicts.
What does the membership fee cover? Are scholarships available? Are payment plans available?
Sticks, mallets, heads, uniforms, cymbals, drums, instructional staff, electronic equipment, practice facilities, transportation, entry fees for shows, Dayton hotel and expenses during championship week, insurance and promotional items. Scholarships are based by need and are only available through the donations of former members. Payment plans are done on an individual basis between either the member, the member’s parents and the business manager of FUPE.
Do I have to be a resident of Farmington or Farmington Hills to be a member?
No, FUPE is open membership to anyone who can make rehearsals and be a part of our ensemble. Generally, our Regional A ensemble is made up of younger Farmington Public Schools students but it is not a requirement.
Is percussion experience necessary to be a member?
It is certainly a help but it is not required for membership. Anyone with a desire to learn and be a part of our ensemble is welcome.
What is the age restrictions for FUPE?
Regional A accepts membership from age 10 to 18. Our Independent A team accepts membership from ages 14 to 22.
How is membership decided? Is there a "spot" for everyone?
There is a spot for anyone who shows an interest and meets the requirements for membership. Members are placed in their respective ensemble through an audition process to determine which ensemble is the best fit for their experience level. No one is excluded from membership.
How can I support the FUPE?
Farmington United Percussion Ensemble is funded through Farmington United Winter Performance Groups, a Michigan non-profit 501c(3) corporation. Support via financial donations and volunteer efforts is essential to the success of the organization and its members. Please visit the Support page of this website to learn more about how you can help!
Do volunteers need to pay the entrance fee at shows?
Unfortunately all volunteers at shows have to pay the entry fee to shows. Both the Michigan Color Guard Circuit and Winter Guard International enforce this rule.
Are membership jackets available to parents and friends of the ensemble?
No, the member jacket is only available to staff and members of the ensemble. Any other FUPE wear and gear may be worn by anyone.
Who Chaperones members on trips? How are hotel rooms assigned?
Parents are invited to volunteer to become chaperones on all trips. A limited number of spaces are available for every show. Rooms are assigned in advance by individuals who will be chaperoning and the administration staff of FUPE.
Who are the staff, what are their qualifications?
The staff of FUPE is a highly dedicated and knowledgeable group of individuals who have all had years of experience in the indoor percussion activity. Many of the FUPE staff have been with the ensemble for more than 5 years and have worked with every part of our organization. For more information about our staff please visit the Staff page.
Why does FUPE not do more shows on a national level?
The expense of traveling out of state is an astronomical amount when you consider transportation, equipment transport, hotel expenses and meals. Also, the vast majority of our membership is still in high school unlike many of the groups they compete with who are made up of university age members. FUPE is dedicated to supporting the academic achievements of our members as well and will always keep school attendance a priority.
What is the relationship between FUPE and Farmington Public Schools?
Beyond providing very generous support for this activity, the Farmington Public schools provides rehearsal space and helps with some of the expenses of the ensemble.
