The Radio Songs chart (previously named Hot 100 Airplay until 2014[1] and Top 40 Radio Monitor until 1991)[2] is released weekly by Billboard magazine and measures the airplay of songs being played on radio stations throughout the United States across all musical genres. It is one of the three components, along with sales (both physical and the digital) and streaming activity, that determine the chart positions of songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

Radio airplay has always been one of the component charts of the Hot 100. Prior to the establishment of the Hot 100, Billboard published a radio airplay chart, a singles sales chart and a jukebox play chart, the last of which was discontinued in 1959 as jukeboxes lost their popularity. During the 1960s and 1970s, Billboard continued to collect airplay data as a component of the Hot 100 but did not make the chart public.[3]

The airplay-only chart debuted as a 30-position chart on October 20, 1984, and was expanded to 40 positions on May 31, 1986.[4] Rankings were based on playlists received by a panel of Top 40 radio stations. On December 8, 1990, Billboard introduced the 75-position Top 40 Radio Monitor chart positions, which ranked songs measured by the number of spins each song on monitored radio stations and the ratings for those stations when the songs were being played based on Nielsen BDS technology.[5] The BDS-measured Top 40 Radio Monitor chart became the official airplay-component of the Hot 100 on November 30, 1991.[6]

Each week, the Radio Songs chart ranks the top 100 songs by most airplay points (frequently referred to as audience impressions, which is a calculation of the number of times a song is played and the audience size of the station playing the tune). A song can pick up an airplay point every time it is selected to be played on specific radio stations that Billboard monitors. Radio stations across the board are used, from Top 40 Mainstream (which plays a wide variety of music that is generally the most popular songs of the time) to more genre-specific radio stations such as urban radio and country music. Paid plays of a song or treatment as bumper music do not count as an impression.

During the early years of the chart, only airplay data from top 40 radio stations were compiled to generate the chart. Effective from issue dated July 17, 1993, adult contemporary stations were added to the panel, followed by modern rock few months later. However, beginning in December 1998, the chart profile expanded to include airplay data from radio stations of other formats such as R&B, rock and country. To preserve the notion of the former chart, the Top 40 Tracks chart (now defunct) was introduced at the same time.

The radio airplay data was previously collected on a Wednesday to Tuesday weekly cycle prior to July 2015, and on a Monday to Sunday weekly cycle from July 2015 to July 2021.[7]As of the chart dated July 17, 2021, the radio airplay data is collected on a Friday through Thursday weekly cycle, which matches that of the other Hot 100 metrics (streaming and sales).[8]

On November 30, 1991, after 21 years of using the Billboard Hot 100 as their source, American Top 40 started using this chart, which at the time was called the Top 40 Radio Monitor. This relationship ended in January 1993, as American Top 40 switched to the Billboard Mainstream Top 40 chart. The ongoing splintering of Top 40 radio in the early 1990s led stations to lean into specific formats, meaning that practically no station would play the wide array of genres that typically composed each weekly Hot 100 chart.

This hasn't always been the case, and I don't know if this has to do with the amount of time I've had my Spotify account or if something about the algorithm has drastically changed - but whenever I start a radio based off a song or artist (which is with the intention to find a NEW artist or NEW music that is related to the song/artist I'm starting the radio off of) it just creates essentially a playlist of music I've been listening to - and not even within the same genre off the song.

I've realized that I haven't found any new artists or any new music, and just continuously listen to the same things over and over again which is quite depressing. The point of the song radio or at least how I use it is to discover new artists that are in the same realm of the artist I'm listening to, and I think you all at Spotify are putting everyone - artist AND listener - at a huge detrimental disadvantage by having it go that way because then there is no discovery for new artists and there is no way for listeners to get into new music without scouring the platform instead of giving good recommendations based off your algorithm. More than anything I want to be able to discover new artists based off song radio, not just hear the same songs I've been listening to. If I wanted to listen to those songs, I would just continue to listen to them. Especially since maybe when I start a song radio off something that is midwest-emo/indie, it'll still play hyperpop/rap in the same playlist which are two completely different genre's and moods.

Just to make sure we are on the same page, could you give us more information about it? When you reach the end of a playlist or album, if it's activated, Spotify will start to play some similar songs to what you were listening to before. It's expected that it does not play the same song you had already listened to on your playlist, for instance. Is it happening to you when playing the 'Auto Play' feature? Let us know and give us more details.

A few updates ago, after any user created playlist that I was listening to finished, and assuming I have "Autoplay" turned on in my options, the queue order would jump immediately to "Recommended Songs - Based on the songs in this playlist" and start playing from the top.

Recently, however, a new update switched this turn order. Now, after any user created playlist ends, it instead jumps to what's called "Radio." The problem is, this "Radio" generates roughly the SAME tracks every single time I'm finished with my playlist. For example, after my metal playlist ends, instead of finding new music, I end up hearing the same songs that I've already heard or liked.

I'm not sure why, but this "Play Queue" isn't random each time like the "Recommended songs - Based on the songs in this playlist" is. That major difference is one leads to way more discovery than the other, and I have to manually click the first song of the Recommended playlist to start that queue.

You mentioned that after your playlist, Spotify starts to play the queue with the exact same songs you've heard before, right? This way, I suggest, first of all, that you check if your queue is empty before you set to play a playlist. You can get the step-by-step in managing your queue here. Once your queue is empty, try to play a playlist and check what happens when all the songs on the playlist finish...

And there are some other things I'd like to make clear. "Recommended Songs" is just a list of tracks that is suggested by Spotify to be added to the playlist, basing on the songs that are already added.

The function "Autoplay" is what starts to play similar songs when your playlist finishes. You can get more information about this feature here. I suggest that you check if it is enabled on your Spotify settings.

The difference is this 'Radio' actually plays the same songs that I've already liked or heard before every time. 'Recommended Songs' was a fresh set of songs. This was great for driving or playing video games because I did not have to manually start the 'Recommended songs' list myself.

There is this playlist I've been working on for about 50 hours how, perfecting the play order and stuff. I can't ever go to the song radio for any song on that playlist without it just giving me pretty much the same playlist, only shuffled. There will be a few songs not in the playlist, but they will only be from albums featuerd in the playlist. It's like Spotify has decided to never show me new music again in this genre. I know there is a LOT out there in this genre, but I'm being limited to just one tiny corner with no way out.

@Jeremy, you've completely missed the problem and have offered no solution or insight. The article you linked does literally nothing to help. Did you even read the original post? The issue here is that Spotify's radio algorithm is lacking in new artists, instead just echoing the playlist back to the user.

Per your linked support article, "Spotify Radio creates a collection of songs based on any artist, album, playlist, or song of your choice. It even updates over time to keep fresh. " Obviously, the radio is not updating over time to keep fresh. Please listen to your users' issues instead of tossing them toward an empty support article.

The way a user generated radio picks content is that it takes into consideration not only on the artist and genre, but also on your personal library and likes and those of other users who have started such a radio.

Due to this there might be similarities between radios, but you can help the algorithm avoid those by expanding your music collection. So if you keep liking more song and following new artists, you should start seeing an improvement after a while.

there is a fundamental problem in the Radio algorithm:

If you select "Play Radio of ..:" of course you want to listen to similar songs to the selected song, but you als want to discover new music.

So my "Radio" plays songs mainly out of my own playlists and I can almost not discover new music.

I have about 10 Playlists with about 500 Songs. I nearly can not discover new songs with "Radio".

recyclobat, what I do: I use Spotify on my computer and use a second free account in a different browser. If I like a song, I copy the Link in my second browser window and play the "Radio" of this song - and get almost only new songs as I don't use playlists in my second profil. e24fc04721
