Our favorite thing to do as a family is…
Our family is strong because…
My hopes and dreams for my child are…
During Family and Community Engagement Week, take a pulse check on communications with your families. Use a simple Google form to ask families “What should we keep doing? What should we start doing? What should we stop doing?"
Community Partner Highlights- Ask students, families, community partners, and educators to share about what partnerships been meaningful to them and why! When a community partner is highlighted, share those quotes back with them and/or share some of the messages on social media!
Vibrant Learning Experiences - Share with families and community partners ways they can help students engage in relevant, authentic, and joyful learning opportunities in and out of school. For more ideas, visit: https://prichardcommittee.org/vibrant/
Resource of the Day - Send home via flyers or email information highlighting an agency, organization, or event that you want parents to know about, such as educational activities, healthcare fairs, financial assistance programs, food banks, etc. For example, tell parents about how to sign-up for the HANDS home visitation program and Dolly Parton Imagination Library.
High-Five Text Messages - Assign staff members to message every family this week to tell them why you appreciate their partnership. For example, "Tamika, your son Demetrius talks all the time about how you do fun games at the grocery store. We love this! High-five!"
Picture This! - Ask family members to send in a picture of them reading with, drawing/writing or playing learning games with their child. Display these pictures in your lobby, or import them into a digital presentation that you can show on a screen in your lobby.
Family Fun Day Make-and-Take-Home - Designate a day to invite parents into the classroom. Have the children make a pinwheel with their parent, and show both parent and child how to practice breathing using the pinwheel. Parents can take the pinwheel home and use this to practice self-regulation through deep breathing with their child.
STEM+Families- The National PTA has materials to support “hands-on exposure to science, technology, engineering and math to engage families and inspire students to pursue career opportunities in STEM fields.” For a variety of STEM-related activities for families, visit www.pta.org/home/programs/stem. For a virtual option, send home materials for one of the activities with students. For an in-person event, choose an activity and host a family station.
Students Speak- Record students telling you about how their families help and support them. Share it with their families or on social media.
Family Exploration Moments- Create an opportunity for families and students to explore, observe, and make predictions together. Provide information and materials to link their playful world to the physical world. It could be as simple as making paper airplanes, making tin foil boats or building a spaghetti and marshmallow tower. Ask simple open-ended questions , such as "In what professions or careers might this kind of problem-solving be useful?"
Student Ambassadors- Equip student leaders to be tour guides for family events and tours at school.
