In 1992, Ding Liren was born in Wenzhou. His parents named him "Liren," inspired by their favorite Confucian saying: "To establish oneself and then establish others, to achieve one's own goals and then help others achieve theirs." From a chess prodigy in Wenzhou to the current world chess champion, Ding Liren's journey spans 26 years. Ding Liren's father recalls that his son has been a chess enthusiast since childhood, showing a unique interest in various board games like "Flying Chess," "Chinese Checkers," and "Chinese Chess." In 1995, the legendary figure of international chess, Anatoly Karpov, visited Wenzhou and engaged in a gender battle with the Women's World Champion, Xie Jun. This match received significant attention and created a great impact locally. That year, Wenzhou was named one of the first "Chess Cities" by the General Administration of Sport of China, planting the seeds of chess in the hearts of many young Wenzhou residents. The following year, Ding Liren's parents enrolled him in a national chess training class. Little did anyone know that this small step would lead him to the 2023 World Chess Championship organized by FIDE.
The newly crowned world chess champion, in an interview with the reporter from the Global Information Broadcasting of the Central Broadcasting Station on May 1st, expressed: Winning the championship is both the result of perseverance and the process of overcoming oneself. I am grateful for the help of my family, friends, and team. Additionally, my friends, family, and team have provided me with a lot of assistance in adjusting my mindset. I have confided in them about a lot of pressure and anxiety. For me, this championship is also attributed to them. Without them, I couldn't have come this far on my own.
After concluding the journey in Astana, Ding Liren will proceed to Romania to continue participating in the competition. Before departing, he told reporters that even in this position, he will continue to do what needs to be done, hoping that his little sparks can silently influence those who share the same passion as him.
