Hello, I'm Fabian, a Phonologist and Historical Linguist from the Great White North

Now based in France, I'm a CNRS Post-Doc Fellow in Historical Phonology at the LLACAN in Paris-Villejuif. I've held research and teaching positions at the Universities of Tours (2019-2021), Lyon II (2016), Lyon III (2016 ) and the University of Montreal (2015) and  hold a double PhD in cotutelle since November 2022.

I work on sound change and variation, studying how contemporary language diversity (that is differences between the actual language of speakers) can inform us about historic states of the language and possible paths of future evolution. In this same light, I study how the typology of modern languages help us to reconstruct ancient and medieval languages, notably Latin, Romance, Germanic and the Dogon languages (Niger-Congo) of central Mali.

Recently, I've been concerned with vowel reduction systems and prominence alignment. I've also argued for a more careful treatment of our primary sources, especially when these have been used (and misused), to reconstruct broad sweeping conclusions on languages and the people who speak them.
