Equipping UAS with STOL capability provides greater versatility and allows the aircraft to operate in areas previously deemed unsuitable for UAS operations, including landing onto and taking off from an aircraft carrier. MQ-9B STOL will be capable of carrying the same payloads and conducting the same missions as the SkyGuardian and SeaGuardian, including maritime surveillance, Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW), Airborne Early Warning (AEW), and surface strike.

after landing, the nose wheel warning sound starts bitching me. and there is no green "nose" light next to the green"left" and "right" wheel light. and its not steerable. if i have a look outside, the wheel looks fine..

I can take off with no problem but when I land the F-16 or the F/A 18 on the aircraft carriers with tail hook extended, the arrest cables do nothing to stop the jets. I have tried landing while low on fuel with no change in status.

At the moment for XBOX the only planes that can catch the arresting wire are the Indiafoxtecho T45 & F35c.

They also do catapult launch. Unfortunatly other planes do not as yet catch the wire on xbox they do for PC with the carrier mod but as of yet not availiable for xbox

When I'm slow enough to not be "overpowered" I can't even see the carrier or the FPV in the HUD, even if I scoot up a little in the seat. The only way I can pull it off is to go to "full-screen HUD" mode, and even then the FPV is off screen and I'm wagging it.

To be fair, it's not specific to the F/A-18, this is generally true for most aircraft. Is this just a sim-ism? How do Naval Aviators do it in real life? I can't believe that they'd do it without being able to see the carrier or the FPV in the HUD (if installed).

Great and very thorough answers, thank you, but I'm still seeking an answer to the original question... how do others deal with the fact that you can't even see the carrier or the VV/FPV in the HUD, even when sitting "higher" in the seat, due to the high pitch angle?

Actually, it should be possible to view over the nose of a carrier (jet) fighter to see what you need to see. There's a tendency for X-Plane cockpits to be designed to sit high in the field of view so it's possible to read the instruments without having to look down, and I suspect this might cause the problem you're observing.

Which X-Plane aircraft are you using? The X-Plane 10 Phantom allows to raise the view position far enough to see the carrier just fine, but it doesn't have a modern HUD (or I haven't found the switch in the 3D cockpit yet).

Most of the time I start carrier approach w/ the 'Special Starts' w/ the throttle set full off. Even so the airspeed is climbing quickly and immediately the airspeed passes 140, I hit pause. I move the seat back some and then I move it up quite a bit until the velocity vector symbol is just visible in the bottom of the hud. I unpause and quickly open throttle to maybe 3/4, drop flaps, gear and hook. The vector will be low compared to the ils cross but moving upward. As soon as the top of the vector circle touches the horizontal line in the cross, I cut back throttle and push forward on the stick. At this point the nose of the plane comes down and the ship is visible in the left half or so of the hud. I adjust throttle to get 55-58% on N1 and look for airspeed to settle into low 140s.(BTW the airspeed recommended by the HSI is 154 but that pain in the butt LSO is yelling 'you are over powered' every 10 seconds until I hit the deck-I drop his volume low enough so he is less annoying) For the rest of the approach I do a lot more elevator moving and very little throttle adjustment. I keep trying to do the 'correct' adjust throttle to control AOA but the throttle response when power is needed is so slow I haven't been able to make it work well.

Hi,

looks like you are doing a great job there is not so much I have to add.

1. If the suggested landing airspeed (weight dependent) in the FDATA menu is 154knots, the aircraft is too heavy for carrier landings. Can be done. But is not recommended. This is with full armament, nearly full external tanks and half full internal tank. Reduce the weight before landing, then it will become easier.

2. Generally, major throttle changes should be avoided. Find a speed and an AoA you want to use, set the throttles and keep it. Autothrottle can help. If major throttle changes are done there are so many other corrections required that the approach becomes very hard.

3. With a stable setting, I would not look too much on the ILS indication. Prefer the VASI lights of the Fresnel lenses of the carrier.

4. As for engine response time. The engines have a certain inertia that seemed realistic to me. This can be reduced if you like that better. Planemaker->Engines Specs -> Engine 1+2->'prop mass ratio to solid aluminum'. If this value is reduced the engine will spool up even quicker. You will, however, see that this will not fully solve. The main problem is that the aircraft is too heavy to land in this config.

I hope this helps.

For the rest, you seem to do great. Have fun!

Yesterday I started using the plain version FA-18. WOW, what a difference getting rid of all the weight makes. I haven't gotten my procedure 100% adjusted yet but things are much better. Now landing in 130-134 airspeed range. Also a few months ago I had set up several 'Situations' so I can quickly go to 'file-load flight' for a quick redo. Well, something in there was causing the LSO to yell all the time. I don't know what it was, but in my new 'situation' w/ the plain plane he isn't doing that any more. YEAH! Thanks again.

@COLIMATA thanks for all the Hornet landing tips! I bought your plane earlier this week and having a great time flying it (particularly LOW AND FAST). I love the visual documentation manual as well. Very helpful. I made one successful landing on the carrier last night, but I have a LOT of work to do! (Trying to make this video publicly available)

BACKGROUND: Fatigue is a well-known hazard in aviation. In military fighter communities, policies have evolved to allow for in-flight use of pharmacological vigilance aids to counteract the negative effects of fatigue. With limited objective evidence supporting the role of these medications in continuous flight operations, the present study seeks to evaluate whether use of modafinil is associated with pilot aircraft carrier landing performance.METHODS: A retrospective, observational study was completed following carrier-based flight operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve. All graded landing passes were included in the analysis. Mixed-effect multivariate linear regression analysis was utilized for the primary outcome of landing signal officer grade of landing performance following combat sorties for events with reported in-flight use of modafinil.RESULTS: A total of 1122 sorties were flown by 79 different pilots with an average landing pass grade of 3.86. The primary outcome of modafinil use in-flight was not generally associated with landing performance. In a subset analysis of more senior ranked aviators, modafinil use appeared to offer a relative performance improvement back to baseline (+0.19). Secondary outcome analysis revealed landing performance was associated with advanced landing technologies (+0.25), sorties later in deployment (+0.05 per 30 d), total career carrier landings (+0.03 per 100 traps), and longer mission duration (-0.04 per hour).DISCUSSION: In the context of evidence supporting subjective benefits of vigilance aid use by aircrew, the results of this study provide ample objective support to the controlled use of modafinil in the operational environment.Schallhorn CS. tag_hash_114_________________________________________________________________________________________. Hi, I am a rather new player. In dive bombing and carrier land tutorial, it is nearly impossible to complete the mission in simulator mose for first trier. I tried for 45 minutes (no joke) and succesfuly landed 2 times but they were counted as crashes. I guess I broke 1 or 2 landing tires, plane is okay. I could not complete the tutorial after 45 minutes!

The worse part is I have to follow stupid rings to land and doing that take ages. You spend 3-4 minutes just for failed landing to start from scratch. Even if I dont folow them in favor of short cut, it takes so much time. My plane speed is around 200 when I touch the ship. That stupid plane cant go slower, a guy on youtube could land with 100 speed with a small plane. going with lower speeds means I ll crash to the carrier or to the see.

My request is separate dive bombing tutorial with carrier landing tutorial and allow us to fly straight in to carrier after we die more than 3-4 times. This is an tutorial after all. It is made to be easy.

The pilots with VMFA-312 practiced landing F/A-18C Hornet aircraft on a simulated aircraft carrier toprepare for an upcoming exercise aboard the USS Theodore Roosevelt, a naval aircraft carrier, scheduled forApril.

According to Hatch who is a landing signals officerthere are multiple factors that compromise a successful and safe landing aboard a carrier. The LSO communicates with the pilot and the pilot uses the ImprovedFresnel Lens Optical Landing System, which is a highly precise landing aid that analyzes the glide slope of the incoming aircraft and the movement of the carrier.

ABOARD USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN (CNN) -- President Bush made a landing aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln Thursday, arriving in the co-pilot's seat of a Navy S-3B Viking after making two fly-bys of the carrier.

It was the first time a sitting president has arrived on the deck of an aircraft carrier by plane. The jet made what is known as a "tailhook" landing, with the plane, traveling about 150 mph, hooking onto the last of four steel wires across the flight deck and coming to a complete stop in less than 400 feet. e24fc04721
