Privacy Policy for New Tab Bookmarks
Effective date: August 15, 2026
New Tab Bookmarks is a Chrome extension developed by Harshit Sharma. It replaces Chrome’s New Tab page with a visual interface for displaying and managing bookmarks.
Information Handled by the Extension
1. Chrome bookmark data
The extension reads bookmark titles, URLs, folder structure, and ordering so it can display and organize bookmarks. When requested by the user, it can create, edit, move, reorder, or delete native Chrome bookmarks.
Bookmark data is stored by Chrome as native browser bookmarks. The developer does not operate a server that receives or stores the user’s bookmark collection.
2. Extension settings
The extension stores settings such as background preferences, bookmark display options, and custom icon mappings using Chrome storage.
Some preferences may be stored using chrome.storage.sync and synchronized by Chrome according to the user’s Chrome account and synchronization settings.
Uploaded background images, local preferences, and other device-specific settings are stored locally in the browser.
3. Top Picks usage data
To provide the Top Picks feature, the extension locally records a bookmark identifier, the number of times that bookmark was opened through the extension, and the most recent opening time.
This information is used only to rank frequently and recently opened bookmarks. It is not sent to the developer or used for advertising, analytics, or profiling.
The extension does not request access to or read the user’s general Chrome browsing history.
External Images and Network Requests
The extension may load favicons, icons, and background images over HTTPS from:
• Google’s favicon service
• DuckDuckGo’s icon service
• Pexels
• Icons8
• Simple Icons
• Websites referenced by the user’s bookmarks
• Image or icon URLs entered by the user
When an image is requested, the relevant provider may receive ordinary network information such as the user’s IP address, browser user agent, and the requested resource. Favicon services may also receive the domain or origin of the bookmarked website for which an icon is requested.
These requests are made only to display the visual bookmark dashboard. External images are not executed as code. The developer does not control how these independent providers process standard network request information.
How Information Is Used
Information handled by New Tab Bookmarks is used only to:
• Display and organize Chrome bookmarks
• Perform bookmark changes requested by the user
• Remember extension preferences
• Display bookmark icons and backgrounds
• Generate the user-facing Top Picks section
Data Sharing and Sale
The developer does not sell user data.
The developer does not use or transfer user data for advertising, marketing, creditworthiness, lending, or purposes unrelated to the extension’s bookmark-management functionality.
Information is shared only when necessary to provide extension functionality, such as requesting external images, or when Chrome synchronizes bookmarks and extension settings according to the user’s Chrome configuration.
Analytics and Accounts
New Tab Bookmarks does not contain advertising, analytics, telemetry, or tracking services.
The extension does not require an account and does not collect names, email addresses, passwords, payment information, health information, personal communications, or precise location information.
Data Retention and User Control
Users can edit or delete bookmarks through the extension or Chrome’s bookmark manager.
Native Chrome bookmarks may remain after the extension is uninstalled unless the user deletes them. Extension-local data can be removed by clearing the extension’s stored data or uninstalling the extension, subject to Chrome’s synchronization behavior.
Limited Use Compliance
The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
Changes to This Policy
This policy may be updated if the extension’s functionality or data-handling practices change. The effective date at the top of this page will be updated when changes are made.
