Definition:
The motherboard allocates power and allows communication to and between the CPU, RAM, and all other computer hardware components. There are multiple types of motherboard, each with different use cases
Where it is used
Every computer must have a motherboard or else the computer could not function
Different Types of Motherboards
ITX is the smallest of the three, which allows it to be used in smaller computers. Due to its size, it does not have the capacity for a lot of I/O or daughterboards. It is only 6.7 × 6.7 inches.
ATX motherboards have become the standard size for motherboards since they came out in 1995. The dimensions of it is 12 × 9.6 inches. ATX allows for more I/O and expansion cards compared to ITX and it is usually easier to work with.
eATX is one of the larger versions of ATX. Not only could it house more daughterboards than ATX, some eATX motherboards can have 2 CPUs installed in them. This is possible because it is 12 x 13 inches.
Other names for Motherboards
Logic Board
Mainboard
Additional Info
Another thing that differs from motherboard to motherboard, besides its size, is its chipset. More expensive chipsets would have better I/O and more PCIe lanes, regardless of whether it is ATX or ITX. On the desktop side, there are only two main CPU companies to choose from, Intel and AMD. On the mobile side, like laptops and phones, the CPU is soldered to the motherboard and more CPU companies, such as Qualcomm.
