The Arabic language represents a rich area for linguistic and applied linguistic investigation. Its phonology, grammar and script contrast with those of English and other commonly studied languages. In addition, its status as a world language in terms of number of native, heritage and second language speakers, its linguistic varieties, social identity characteristics and contact with other languages provide many areas for research. EXAL 2022 builds on previous EXAL conferences to bring together empirical researchers on Arabic and related languages from all parts of the world, offering a forum to share current and potential methodologies, findings and theoretical perspectives.

The Organizing Committee of EXAL 2022, based in Zayed University, UAE, aims to present empirical, methodologically rigorous and theoretically informed studies of Arabic and related languages, including topics such as:

* Psycholinguistics, morphological processing, characteristics of Arabic text.

* Discourse analysis

* Learning/development of Arabic in native users, heritage users or second language learners

* Arabic for specific purposes

* Corpus analysis

* Computational Linguistics, Natural Language Processing or other technologies

* Varieties of Arabic

* Arabic as a polycentric language

* Arabic and social identity

Presentations at EXAL 2022 will consist of 20 minutes online presentation plus 10 minutes discussion.

Abstracts and presentations may be in either English or Arabic. Conference organizers will work with presenters to ensure that presentations are accessible to both English- and Arabic-speaking audiences.
