Fighting Food Waste & Food Insecurity One Meal at a Time
OUR MISSION
At EVI, we see things through a simple lens: food insecurity is all around us, people are going hungry, and good food is being wasted every single day. Let's do something about it.
With the support from our partners at Food Stash Foundation, and The Door Is Open, we’re able to collect surplus ingredients and turn them into nutritious, hearty meals that are tasty, easy to prepare and to share. Their support makes it possible for us to focus on what we do best, transforming donations into meals and expanding our reach.
What started as a student-led idea has grown into a collaborative effort. We care deeply about what we do, and we’ve poured that care into every part of this initiative, from the cooking itself to the community we’re building around it. Whether it’s fundraising, food prep, or volunteering, we’re always looking for more people to join in.
Check out our Instagram @evi_vancouver for a look at how it all comes together. And if you want to get involved or learn more about what we do, feel free to shoot us a message, we'd love to connect!
Proudly,
The EVI Team
How We Do Things at
MealBridge
We’re committed to empowering individuals and communities through sustainable action. Here’s how we recover surplus food and turn it into simple, nutritious meals, step by step.
Sustainable Partnerships
Everything starts with community. We collaborate with local nonprofits, like Food Stash Foundation, who provide us with surplus ingredients on a weekly basis that would otherwise go to waste. From there, our team plans how to make the most of what we’ve got, turning donated ingredients into well-balanced, satisfying meals. These partnerships are the foundation of everything we do.
Community Empowerment
Our work goes beyond food, it’s also about people. Through outreach to clubs, networks, and student groups, we bring in volunteers who help with everything from fundraising to meal prep. Every person who joins us brings something valuable to the table, and their energy keeps us going. They’re not just volunteers, they’re the reason this works.
Food Preparation
All ingredients are handled and prepared in line with certified FOODSAFE practices. Every member of our team holds Food Safe certification, ensuring a high standard of safety and hygiene. We prepare our meals in the commissary kitchen at The Door is Open in the Downtown Eastside, where volunteers are organized into small teams with clear, step-by-step tasks for their part in the process. With careful planning and coordination, we stay efficient, reduce waste, and make the most of every ingredient, so we can produce as many high-quality meals as possible.
Thoughtful Packaging
For every soup we make, we follow a two-step cooling process before portioning it into individual BPA-free, food-grade containers and placing it in the freezer. Once fully frozen, each soup block is vacuum sealed, labeled with ingredients and nutritional information, and returned to the freezer for safe storage. During transport or donation, the meals are placed into insulated cooler boxes to maintain proper temperature control. All meals are delivered to freezers for short-term storage until they’re ready for distribution.
OUR IMPACT
OUR PARTNERS
Safe Food Is Good Food
We take food safety seriously, because we’re cooking for real people, and they deserve meals they can trust.
All surplus food donations are carefully sorted, with anything unsafe or unusable filtered out. What's kept is cleaned, prepped and cooked with care before serving
Good food starts with doing things right, at every step.
MEET OUR TEAM
As a first-generation Canadian, my family received the support needed to overcome marginalization and build a better life. I recognize the privilege I have, which is why I choose to give back. At UBC, many students struggle to access proper meals, and I believe that together, we can create meaningful change through what we give.
My time volunteering in the Downtown Eastside has opened my eyes to the true scale of food insecurity. It didn’t take long for me to realize that this concern exists even closer to me than I thought. That is why I’ve made it my mission to tackle the issues of food waste and hunger, starting right here at UBC.
Food insecurity has affected those closest to me, and for the first time, I truly saw how severe it is. The ability to choose what to eat is becoming a luxury, many are left wondering if they'll have anything to eat at all. I believe in our cause because no one should ever have to live with that uncertainty.
