How to write 9 Books the same time?

"Imagine a shoe store in which you stand all alone in front of meter-long shelves."

This is how A.A.Lucas describes the writing of the TIMEWULF saga. But what does that mean?

In the first part of our interview with A.A.Lucas we get an insight into his writing technique.

"Ed" stands for editorial staff :)

Ed:

What does the metaphor with the shoe store mean, in relation to writing?

AA Lucas:

Every time I start to write, I feel like I'm standing in front of a shoe rack: Then I'm overwhelmed by the variety, the shapes and the colors.

I then quickly get the feeling, that I am not at all familiar with the properties of these "writing shoes" and I just start putting on a pair of them, trying them out.

It often happens, that I run bubbles or write in this case, and soon stop walking / writing. But it can also be that I feel so comfortable in a pair of shoes that I just run off, getting lost.

That happens especially when I move around on the internet.

Ed:

That sounds very stressful. How do you manage to focus then?

AA Lucas:

I have several techniques for this, mostly I use all of them at the same time, but sometimes also one after the other.

Ed:

What is that in particular?

AA Lucas:

First of all, you have to accept that you can't force writing. It is a flow that you have to surrender to. Either it flows or it does not flow. There are good days and there are bad days.

For example, you are not well advised to sit down and write with a stressful mind.

Ed:

Will you get writer's block then?

AA Lucas:

Yes and no. I've learned to leave that word out for myself. If Iwould be indulged in what is known as writer's block - and I have often done that in the past - then I would never get to write anything. The human mind always uses excuses to find the easiest way. Then you quickly get lazy and don't do anything.

Ed:

With something like that, a lot of time can fly away. Would you say that you wasted time, you could have used better.

A.A.Lucas:

On the one hand yes, on the other hand not either. A material, as extensive as the TIMEWULF saga, takes time to mature. Sometimes I have to go "pregnant" for a while with some ideas to realize that it is born death - to stick with the picture. But with other thoughts I immediately realize, that the idea is great. When that happens, I have a "run".

Ed:

Which brings us back to the picture with the shoes. Are you a shoe fetishist - as well as Quentin Tarantino with the feet?

A.A.Lucas:

This question is very private. So I'd rather not say anything about that. (smiles mischievously) The number of my shoes on the shelf is very rare, to put it that way.

Ed:

Back to writing. How do you balance the incredible number of characters, locations and scenes? Isn't that impossible for one person?

A.A.Lucas:

I actually had this impression for a very long time. But over time I have acquired a few methods that work well for me in combination.

Ed:

Can you give us a specific example?

A.A.Lucas:

Gladly ... I listen to ASMR, for example, to concentrate.

Ed:

Auto Sensoric Meridian Response - These are noises from everyday life, that someone has recorded and put online, right?

A.A.Lucas:

Exactly. I have seen and even influenced the development of this from the start.

When an official name for this phenomenon was sought, in a community for noise lovers like me, many years ago in America, I was one of the many people worldwide, who voted for the term ASMR. Maybe I would be lying if I´d say, that theactual idea for the term was mine - but I don't remember that.

I have been a great advocate of this art form ever since. I have a couple of sound files that I would swear by. Many of the videos on Youtube are highly recommended.

There is nothing, that I can use, to concentrate better.

Ed:

Which ASMR Youtubers are your favorites?

A.A.Lucas:

That remains my secret.

Ed:

And what else, besides ASMR, can help you organize your ideas?

A.A.Lucas:

I have created my own TIMEWULF Wiki. So I have created a reference work for myself in which everything is cataloged and categorized in a wonderful orderly manner.

With one click, I can find everything very quickly, change and edit it just as quickly. But I first started with notes in handy blank booklets.

Ed:

Will your fans see this TIMEWULF Wiki one day?

A.A.Lucas:

They already do (in parts). Much of what is published on the TIMEWULF homepage comes from my wiki, which by the way looks very similar to the homepage.

Ed:

That's great! So TIMEWULF fans can see a bit through the keyhole on the homepage and look over your shoulder while you are writing.

A.A.Lucas:

That sounds a bit "creepy", but that's what I would call it, yes.

To be continued soon . . .
